Sticking points are the spots where a combination lock (the kind with a single dial) seems to "stick" when you pull on the shackle or handle, making it difficult or impossible to rotate. In the past, if a spot stuck, it meant that that number was part of the combination; now, the wheels often have many "false" gates, meaning that it may or may not be.
