Machine cut vs handmade Bumpkey

Bump keys and lock bumping finally have their own area. Discuss making bump keys, proper bumping techniques, and countermeasures here.

Machine cut vs handmade Bumpkey

Postby jpcrazylegs » 5 Nov 2006 0:57

Hey, I first started bumping with my handmade key.

The handmade key has the tip and shoulder filed down.

I can get it to open my deadbolt almost every single time with the one click pullout method, but have trouble re-locking it with the bumpkey.

So I ordered a machine cut set. These keys do NOT have the tips and shoulders filed. On the forums I read about how you can bump the lock without the tip and shoulder filed. It is indeed true, but for some reason, the machine cut key is not as successful as bumping the lock with the one click pullout method. I can only bump it maybe 1/15 times compared to 1/2 times with the handmade.

Can anyone clarify if the one click pullout method works better when the tip and shoulder are filed? People say its not neccesary to bump the lock which is true, but my handfiled key with the tip and shoulder shaved seem to work BETTER.

That might be a situation where if you like the results of the key that works better then go with it.

I have had better luck bumping with the keys shoulder and tip filed and with out pulling it out. So, I stick with the method that works best for me even though I try not to bump my locks that often, just bumped them to succeed and stopped, just to say I have done it.

You might even find a new technique or key mod that works better than the ones you have, keep it up and post any new findings.

Good luck!

To answer your questions:
The pullout method does not require you to shave off the shoulder and tip. Doing this will have no effect at all.
Shaving off the shoulder and tip is for the minimal movement method.

Alright, from the looks of your image, I think the bottom grey key is your handmade key.

Your problem here is not the shaving of the tip or shoulders.
I think your handmade key works better because the teeth on the machine made key are near non-existant compared to the handmade.
The machine made bump key probably doesnt transmit enough force on the bump to lift the pins most of the time.

Yeah the bottem one is my handmade, i can get it to work on mostly all kwikswet locks, BUT since the teeth are so big some locks it is a rather tight fit instead of being loose and easy to bump forward. U just have to apply greater force. I guess I'll have to stick with my own custom made keys.
