I've been fileing my own 999's. Getting better. but just cant seem to get them to work on padlocks. It's frustrating because i know that they should work and i tried holding the lock different ways, but still no luck five failed keys later. Any suggestions besides purchasing a set??

Any particular reason you want to open a Master padlock?
In passing I note that padlocks, by definition, are difficult to bump.

master m1's especially the newer ones use the master anti-bump technology. that said, the cylinders kinda float inside the housing anyway. Just pick it.

I think that bump keys are a form of bypass, and therefore not allowed to be discussed in this forum. That said, I have made a few Master M1 bump keys that work, except for the locks with anti-bump pins. So it can be done. I just don't use them because they can (and will) damage the lock, and picking is so much more fun. Have not used that bump key in a very long time because picking is more enjoyable.

No, bump keys are not considered advanced.. Feel free to discuss them. OP: what are you using as a basis for the depths and spacing on your cuts? are you hand filing? using a key machine? Are your valleys shaped like a \/ or a \_/ ? show us a photo of your 5 keys, we'll tell you what's wrong or right with them. upload here: http://tinypic.com and Copy Paste the link or [IMG] URL in your reply. bump keys are not magical, even if cut perfectly, they still require practice and a proper method to work, Squelchtone

Yes, but to bump a padlock you need to hold it in a vice. In most circumstances you cannot do this to padlocks in use. Thus padlocks, by definitions, are difficult to bump.

I have never even tried bumping a padlock in a vice. Every padlock I have bumped has been on a hasp or a chain.

Since Squelchtone corrected my thoughts on bump keys (Thanks, Squelchtone), I dug out one of the Master M1 bump keys I made. It has worked on about 75-80% of the Master locks using that keyway that I have tried it in. Went through a 'want to try bumping' phase, but found that over time, the locks would no longer work well with the original keys. So I stopped bumping. Good luck, Gordon

I have also found my pick gun to damage padlocks more often. They are prone to damage by bump keys, pick guns, and rough picking.

Unfortunately Bumping a Master Padlock is not as easy as it sounds. The top pins are usually heavily cluttered with security pins and the weight of the pins are so light that they dont come back down fast enough. Now from my experience to get an M1 bump key to work your going to want to file it down further to a minimal movement bump key. hook a tension wrench in the keys eye so that you dont put too much torque on it. Then apply tension via the wrench and repeditly tap the bump key. I usually get it in about 6-7 taps with the minimal movement version (30 seconds or so). also my bump keys are machine made on an hpc blitz machine. I find that hand making them they dont work nearly as good.
