DIY bump hammers

Bump keys and lock bumping finally have their own area. Discuss making bump keys, proper bumping techniques, and countermeasures here.

DIY bump hammers

Postby lockstar5000 » 21 Feb 2013 1:29

I am planning to make my own bump hammers (2) using the following:

Metal ruler cut in 2 pieces to about 10 and 7 inches
Cut off handle of 2 old screwdrivers, one smaller in diameter for 2 separate hammers
Self tapping screws such as a wood or sheet metal type screw
Epoxy to ensure a good connection between the screw and the handle/hammerhead

I plan to use one metal ruler (24 in.) cut into about 10 inches and 7 inches each for 2 different hammers, one large and one small.
I will cut off the handle end on an old screwdriver or other tool that is made of a hard polyethylene or plastic.
Then I will tap the cut off handle to accept a screw connecting the ruler and handle to form a flexible handled hammer for optimum energy transfer. I will post pics as I go and hopefully come up with a decent effective bump hammer.

If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions as I go forward, please share as this is my 1st attempt, and want this to be a quality tool that is easy to make so others may make their own and save some money.

So I decided to only make one hammer, like I said, I used a cutoff of a screwdriver handle, a wood screw, and a cut aluminum ruler. No epoxy needed, I just drilled a pilot hole into the head, and the ruler already had a hole in it. I also bent the end like I saw another member on this forum do. It just gives a little leverage for "swinging" the hammer. Very simple but it works quite well:

Thats really cool and I love the creativity but I put those rubber feet for chairs on a small ball headed hammer. Kinda makes my hammer more universal too. BUT 10/10 for creativity. I am betting 2-3 people do this at least lol

Take a file and flatten the surface that strikes the key. Your fingers will thank you.

Real bump hammers cost about $6. However a cheap screwdriver handle works about the same for me.

It's a really good idea, as long as you have broken or a useless screwdriver, but otherwise isn't a better screwdriver almost as expensive as a bump hammer?
I think a dedicated bump hammer is also better both a newbie (better weight ratio and so on) and a professional (looks better).
But if bump hammers are expensive or unavailable in you region this is a really useful idea!

So I think it's still a very good idea, it's a very ingenious DIY plan. Don't take it the wrong way, I'm not dissing it :D , a lot of people treasure self made objects a lot more than factory made ones. I'm just asking whether you think it's that economical.
(And I too respect people who make their thing themselves! So kudos tor the post!:) )

Rubber feet. I've missed that while writing.
Please disregard my post entirely. :D
The new version should be: congrats on the nice idea! :)

Probably not that economical, but I didn't want to wait around for a bumphammer bought online and shipped. If you have an old screwdriver to sacrifice its very cheap or free. The only reason I didn't hack off an old screwdriver is because of where they came from. The house we live in (Me and my girlfiend) came with a lot of old tools of all types. They belonged to the old man who owned the house previously and he was obviously quite the handyman, with lots and lots of old tools. I just don't feel right mutilating his stuff, it's kind of out of respect for the old guy (RIP). So I went to Menards and bought a 4 pack of screwdrivers for 5 bucks. So I got the hammerhead, and 3 screwdrivers left over. The ruler was free, it was an old metal yardstick that was mine, not the old mans. So it would be free if I had used an old screwdriver. Just basically me being impatient (and cheap!)

Hey lockstar I actually needed a bump hammer recently and i looked around the shop. I found a scrap piece of steel a broken screwdriver and a self tapping screw. Ended up with this. Worked pretty good.

I did not mean to make the image so huge. I am sorry if this is a problem
