pulling out 2 notches instead of one..

Bump keys and lock bumping finally have their own area. Discuss making bump keys, proper bumping techniques, and countermeasures here.

pulling out 2 notches instead of one..

Postby Mista_Healy » 10 Apr 2015 22:56

I've found that pulling out a bump key (any bump key) i use on any lock is so much easier to open when i pull the key out 2 notches, so the first "peak" of the key is set right at the beginning of the key hole. i can bump open pretty much any lock i try on the first or second hit with the 2 notch out method. i find it not impossible, but rather an annoying hassel when i try pulling it out one notch. does anyone else use a "2 notch out" approach? or am i the "lone ranger" lol

I have tried it both ways and it does seem to work as good as 1 (maybe better, I couldnt really tell) but I gave up bumping as it was just not fun like SPPing a lock.

I purchased the 39 key set from bumpmylock (still waiting on the Schlage #145....grrrr)

Happy bumping!

i love bumping, i have a 30 key set, all nickle silver, and i have a collection of springs, washers, rubber o-rings to help with 'speed bumping' which is something ive been experimenting with. i love it. i consider myself a 'practical picker' meaning there are 19 different ways to open a master pad lock 1-7. so i enjoy practicing all of them. bumping is a great method, but i dont wast my time with '2 notches' when im speed bumping.

Wrench, do you cut down the shoulder and the nose of the bumpkey before putting on the springs or rubber O rings?

I was thinking of modifying my bump keys for machine gunning but I didnt want to do something that is irreversible and screw up my bump keys (even though I like picking better)

two is effective but in my opinion should only be used if you dont feel the cylinder really moving at all after a few whacks with it pulled out only one notch. i find that when you have it pulled out more, the cylinder can jump more if you hit it just right however, at the same time, it does also take longer to pull it out that much and i find it does mess up the lock more.

Hi friends, for me..my approach was first, the 2mm pulling out, (this means my bumpkey is pre cut 2mm from the shoulder) and aided with a light spring, and the hit is light but successive. my second try was the "one notch pulling out. and the hit is moderate to solid. honestly i haven't tried the 2 notches out, but i will now..only if i fail on those 1st and 2nd method. because, i think in the 2 notches it will kick that pins so strong, that might deformed the springs, and once that happens , it will have less response to the pins in dropping back.. but as said that 2 notches pulling out yield more success the 1 nothes, it might just be a matter of familiarization which method we observed is better. i mean any of the mention method is effective..its just all in each experience. regards.
