HOW TO: Homemade Bumping Hammer

Bump keys and lock bumping finally have their own area. Discuss making bump keys, proper bumping techniques, and countermeasures here.

I have never ever used mine on the job. I have only used it for experiment and curiosity in the workshop. I do carry it with me along with a few bump keys but never had to pull it out to open someones lock for them. I think if you can't pick it with all the different methods you probably won't have much chance bumping it either. Now I'm curious if any professional locksmiths here choose to bump over picking when on the job?

I often use bump keys for quickness (especially on warrant work) mainly as the sheriff or bailiff wants in as fast as possible.

BUT if working for the general pubic I will always go to the pick set first, I just think it is a lot more professional.

I have never tried to bump a lock on the job as picking works well and as stated before if you can't pick it bumping probably will not work either....(unless you are lucky). I have all the gear with me to bump but have never had the need. I am sure that if you practiced the bump method on hundreds of different locks and were successful that it could be a viable way to efficiently open locks. However it works in the same principle as a pickgun only that you get one bump instead of several clicks to manipulate the lock.

I saw a guy make a bump hammer out of an old shoe sole / heel. He just cut a piece out of the bottom of the leather sole, right thru the heel. It wasn't pretty, but it was effective, and cheap !!

Interesting to see all the different approaches to tools for bumping. I bought a bump hammer. Its the plastic one. Not wild about it. i bought a few 10 oz or 12 oz hammers from the dollar store. I cut the head of the hammer off of the handle. The handle has a rubber grip. Works pretty good.

Nice build. Wasn't sure what would be a good material for the head.

Nicely made, there goes another way on my checklist to make a bump hammer thanks for the pics, I usually use the end of a screw driver. Does the type of hammer we use make a difference?

I like the fiberglass hammer handles with a rubber grip. Cut the handle just below the head of the hammer. Works good as a bump hammer. Actually a 16 oz hammer handle is a better weight for me for bumping. I have I think 3 from different weight hammers.

Just thought I'd share my cheap easy bump hammer. I used a ruler i had laying around it already had a perfect sized hole in one end and a cheap rubber mallet with interchangeable heads from harbor freight tools.

My main act is LRP shooting which also includes serious gunsmithing. As a result I have several tools including a gunsmithing hammer. My new set of bump keys arrived yesterday and my first attempts at using it included using the gunsmithing hammer as a bumping hammer. Maybe it is because of how much time I have spent using the gunsmithing hammer on my guns but I found it to be very effective; more so than the screwdriver handles I also tried. The thing is a gunsmithing hammer has multiple screw in tips of rubber, nylon, brass, and other stuff. For me at least I would rather buy a hammer and spend my time picking/bumping than making tools. Here is an Amazon link but you can also find them from other sources.

I took a piece of duct tape, a wooden paint stirrer, and a small block of wood. Taped the wood to the paint stick...... done.

Nice work.
Girl said I could pick lock that I needed access to, to bring Meter Can from inside Laundry Room to outside of building. Schlage was taking longer than it should. So I tried my new bump key, no hammer yet. So I tried a 6" piece of 1/2" PVC. Worked Very good. Less than 5 tries? I may be over thinking it. But anyone remember the 5 ball that hung from 2 strings, if you swing 1 ball into rest, one would bounce up from other side, if swung 3 balls, 3 would swing up from other side, 2 and 4 ball would also do. I think it was to show every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Got to thinking it was working so good because the PVC was relatively light, as is the pins and springs?
