Peterson Bump Keys

Bump keys and lock bumping finally have their own area. Discuss making bump keys, proper bumping techniques, and countermeasures here.

Peterson Bump Keys

Postby Svensontini » 1 Sep 2019 13:18

I ordered some bump keys from Peterson. Good enough price, good communiction, fast shipping and they had the ones I was looking for (Corbin Russwins, which aren't too common).
.
Nothing special, cut on JMA blanks. They are stamped with their part #, I would prefer they didn't stamp them as I would prefer to stamp them myself with the keyway, pins, and the word bump. Even though they were stamped, they put a sticker on the bows identifying them also, and those stickers are a booger to get off - the move is to spray them with carb cleaner, let it soak in, then they peel right up.
.
They are bump keys - offset cut with all the triangles the same height. The shoulder was left on, but with the offset cut one castration ring lines things up well, so no real need to file the shoulder off.
.
They don't seem to have burnished the keys after cutting them though, the cuts were still quite rough. I burnished them and they're fine now.
.
They work, but interestingly enough, my homemade ones seems to be working better, why I dunno...mine are on factory blanks, maybe that makes a difference.
.
All in all, if you have access to a machine, then make your own - play with the offset of the blank being cut to get that last triangle the right size, and you're good to go.
.
If you don't have access to a machine, then their products and service is a good enough value - especially since they have some less common ones available.
