I finally had a few bump keys made (well, the cuts done, I finished 'em), and bought this little hammer. All I can say is WOW This is so kewl!!!

I've posted these elsewhere but I feel they would profit from being here:

a bumpkey hammer styled after the Tomohawk made of PVC for the handle and carved Oak for the striker. Took perhaps 45 minutes to do including carving the wood.

I used it to bump the cruciform lock in my video and it has worked for the other locks I've tried it on.

it would be much better if the end of it had a kind of curve .. I can see how having one of those helps you to grip it - if I make another I'll make sure I include this.

well it has given pleasing results, and I have no complaints. It functions well and the only problems I have with it are aesthetic.

I'm using it to bump constantly - the handle is pretty flexible.. the striker was a kind of experiment, but it seems that oak functions fine as a striker.

Illusion,

You may be able to form a curl at the end of your existing tool by putting a piece of 3/4"-1" dowel or steel rod in a vise and using a heat gun to form your tool around it. That may be worth a shot.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

I made mine with a peice of tefflon. It works okay but I think oak will work better. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b283/3up/HPIM5191.jpg

I tried to model mine after a tomahawk I didn't have actual dimentions so I kind of guessed at them.

heres my hammer:

[img=http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/1369/img15439zd.th.jpg]

I just finished the handle today its .08" thick X 1.125" wide and 10" long made out of UV grade PVC.

The hammer face is 1.25" X 1.25" .75" deep made of delrin plastic I chose delrin because its tougher than nylon. I plan on making another one out of aluminum just to see the difference.

scale with a us quarter:

sorry for poor quality
If you can't make it work try yelling "aww d*****t!" and throwing your tools it never worked for my pops but it entertained me :)

weight

Postby raimundo » 13 Jan 2006 12:11

I see some of the pictures use and american coin to indicate size, does anyone include data about hammer head weight, and the relative stiffness of the hammerhead material. A lot of the various types mentioned actually are materials that come in different qualities of bounce. Has anyone tried a coathangerwire through a superball?

all ive ever used for a bump hammer is the wooden handle off of any hammer or purchased seperately at just about any hardware store
If it aint broke, Dont fix it. Just take it apart and see whats going on inside!

Okay.. so basicaly the same hammer as before, but this time with a loop on the handle.

To bend it, simply point a hot-air-gun at it and wait for 4 seconds - then bend the plastic to the right shape... it will remain soft enough for about 20 seconds during which you will have plenty of time to to mess about with it. After about 1 minute or so the plastic will be as hard as it previously was, and you will have a nice little curve. Of note is that if you fail to make the right shape the first time you can re-heat the plastic to try again.

I am happy with the design, and when I have time I will get some nice clean, smooth PVC and make a better handle - the one at present is pretty dirty but it's the only thing I had when I spontaniously decided to make it...

Now this is it's humble beginning - a piece of PVC curtain track (getting it flat was most of the work lol)
