Bump keys and lock bumping finally have their own area. Discuss making bump keys, proper bumping techniques, and countermeasures here.

Alright, I know Bump Keys are an easy and cheap way to get through locked doors, but I'd like to give them a try. About cutting them, I live in Canada, and most people have 1 or 2 types of Weiser locks, so I woulden't need more than 1 or 2 types of keys. Should I just go to a key cutting place and ask for a 9-9-9-9-9 key, or will they start asking me questions why? Also, this is off topic and not about bump keys, but if I were to try and pick a house lock (5 pin) with conventional picks, how long would it take me at 1st and how hard is it? I'm making a set of picks out some hacksaw blades later this afternoon.

I will assume that you have watched Toool's video, if not I would suggest that first. Just do a search here for TOOOL. Second I had no luck at all getting any person locally cut me keys at 99999, or what ever the deepest cut is. What I did so far was buy a couple sets of "depth" keys that can be bought in lots of places. I then used the deepest cut key in the set, had copies made, Trimmed the shoulder and end off Just a little. This part will be the only modifing you will need to do, unless one of the locks you bump has a "9 " cut. If that is the case you will need to modify the depth of the cut. Since this is just a hobby,I never mess with the depth..I just move on to a different lock and skip the ones that have the "9" cuts. I hope this has helped in some way.
Everythang is chikin' but tha bill....

Bump Keys are an easy and cheap way to get through locked doors
bump keys are simply another way to open a lock without the key
( a lock that you own or have permission to open
and hopefully a lock that you do not use every day)

These questions make it sound like your motivations may not be ethical. Why does it matter what locks your neighbors have? Just about any locksmith that is not a criminal himself will want to know "why" you want a 999 key. If you have a good reason, you will not have any problems. If you say the same things to him that you said in your post, he is going to think you are wanting to break into houses. Also be aware that bumpkeying takes practice, and there is a good chance that you will damage some of the locks you bump(It is very hard on the locks).

I don't want to break into people's houses, it's just that everyone has 1 type of house keys, so that's the key I would need. I simply want to buy a lock and experiment bumping. But my question is what would I answer if he would ask me why I need a 9-9-9 key. I'm not too sure if they would make me one if I said I wanted to mess around with bumping. Again, I'm not a burglar and I don't go into other people's houses, and I do not take part in any illegal activity. Picking and bumping is just a fun hobby.

Why?
Go and buy a lock that isnt common around your area, hold the key in a vise and file down the cuts as explained in all the other bumping threads to the lowest cut on THAT key.
Practice bumping THAT lock, if your only playing/practicing then that is the best option for you.
You cant get blamed for anything if your key doesnt fit any local locks.

I could do that, but the point is having a practical bump key which I can use to get into my house.

If you want to get into your house they make these things..hmmm i think they are called KEYS!
Don't use bumpkeys with your own house lock unless you are willing to pay for a new one when you damage it.

Although from another angle it could be argued that this bump key has the potential to open every other door in your area. Bumping a lock may damage it, so damaging your main point of entry and risking people calling you a criminal seems more trouble than it's worth.
