Could have also had a buddy smuggle something into him, as there were no metal detectors, and security was probably the sheriff sitting at a desk watching you. Or if the cell had windows with no glass, but just bars, someone could sneak up at night and drop something in for the prisoner.

Does it have to be silent.? he could use a charge from a smuggled round from a revolver to blow the lockcase apart. Seperating the riveted lock body. Allowing the lever pack to slip out of position. Allowing him to lever the bolt back with his toothpick. 1800's macgiver style.
