Found a real cool Yale lock!

Postby UnlockingBoredom » 2 May 2015 20:49

I was at the swap meet and saw this cool Yale lock, it was $8.00 and with no key thats hard for me to do with the little money I get. I thought the wife would like it so I bought it with the idea I will make a key for it.

I tried for days to get the pins to bind... thinking that the plug was frozen I sprayed WD40 in it to see if it would unfreeze. After 2 days sitting there I tried again... no luck! Well today I was playing around with it again and found that you have to pull up on the shackle and apply tension to make the pins bind... I am in the process of figuring out how to grow a 3rd limb so I can impression this lock...lol

Here is the keyway (it uses a flat key)
Image

When I get the key done (if I can do it) I want the top of the key to match the symbol on the lock.

Anyone know anything about this lock? when it was made?

Thanks,

Hi,
I don't know exactly when they were made, but I think early 1900's. I made a key for one by picking it then disassembling it. Lauren did the same thing http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=48948&hilit=padlock+restoration&start=150

You can also shim the shear line on that lock. ;)

That is what we call a PKPT (Push Key Pin Tumbler lock. Designed in the mid to late 1800's, they were produced IIRC until the 1920's.

They can also have serrated pins and spool pins.

Thanks guys! I came back to read before bed and noticed your posts... I shimmed it open in about 30 seconds! now why didnt I think of that? LOL

Now I have to find some good material to use as a key, or find a flat blank that I can use. The wife is very happy now that I will be able to make a key to fit it. She said she is going to make a shadow box to display it.

When I made a key for mine, it looked like it was in good shape, but it frozen up severely. I soaked it in penetrating oil for a week, but that didn't work, I also tried other chemicals, but they didn't work either. I eventually had to resort to other methods to free up the cylinder. Of course it wasn't shim-able even after I freed it up. Is shimming considered a bypass?

I ran that code through Instacode just now and nothing came up.

Oh well.... It is definately a U 1614

I guess I will continue looking for a factory blank in brass, I saw one on ebay but it was with 1000 other keys and the guy said it was part of all the other keys so he wont sell it alone.

Go to a local locksmith. He should have blanks for a safe deposit lock. You can cut it to the proper shape, and you are set!

I have that exact same lock! It's one of only two locks I own that has never been picked. I've never been able to get anything to bind. Maybe I can loop the shackle over something and pull while I pick it.

That or wrap the shackle in cloth and hold it in a vise. Use something to pry up gently on the lock body as you pick it.

Also be aware that some of these have serrated pins and true mushroom pins.
