How to reprogram a hacked Schlage lock?

Postby nobuhle » 24 Oct 2016 22:17

We have a Schlage lock on both our front and back doors which has been working just fine and easy to program. We recently learned that someone had been gaining entry into the house through the front door simply by pushing the Schlage button and any other digit while the button is blue. If you immediately turn the knob, it unlocks. This doesn't work for the back door, only the front door. And it doesn't matter if user codes are programmed or not. Anyone can still unlock the door by pressing the Schlage button and one other digit. Needless to say, we feel totally unprotected. Did someone hack this lock? And what can we do to resolve this issue?

Sounds like the default access was not removed or changed, have you considered reading the manual for your lock to make sure all default out of the box accounts and button presses are disabled?

Schlage's site has all the manuals, but I dont know your exact model off hand.

Yes, that sounds similar to my issue, so I just tested it by pressing the button alone, and you're absolutely right. My problem is that I moved here with the lock already in place. I received programming instructions for adding and deleting over over the phone if I can recall, and I just typed them up manually. Do you know where I can find the instructions for reinstalling the lock, and will it require physically removing the lock?

If your lock isnt installed correctly you may have to take it out of the door and follow step by step instructions to make sure the mechanical parts are right and then add new codes in again.

Make sure the programming code decal is inside the lock. You'll need that to make any changes.

if the programming code thats on the sticker does not work

remove the batteries and press the schlage button and it will revert back to the programming and user codes on the sticker

The lock was installed with the brown tab inside 90 degrees out of phase. Take the lock apart, turn that brown tab/lever 90 degrees, and reinstall it.

You can verify this by going to your back door lock (which is working correctly). Start with the door unlocked. Press the Schlage button (the same way you have been able to unlock the front door), and you will be able to lock the door. But it will not work for unlocking it. That is the way it is supposed to work. They call it the "Lock and Leave" feature.

You can also program the lock to block that way of locking (or in the case of the incorrectly assembled lock, unlocking) by that method.

I must confess that I do find this problem to be humorous and I see it often with the kwikset powerbolt

Here is a .PDF from Schlage that explains the programming.

Just took off the back cover from mine to take a pic, and it is a brown lever/tab. Take off the rear cover.

Image

If assembling the lock with the deadbolt retracted, the lever should be up and down, with the tailpiece of the lock angled from lower left to upper right, like so:

Image

If assembling with the deadbolt extended, the lever should be pointed away from the outer edge of the door, with the tailpiece angled from top left to lower right.

Image

Those angles are if you have the lock mounted on the left side of the door, as viewed from the inside. Reverse them if the lock is mounted on the right side.
