Ilco Bump Halt pins in other locks

Postby tpark » 13 Mar 2017 16:23

I bought a bunch of Ilco Bump halt kits in hopes of refitting some pin locks with these babies to improve their bump/pick gun resistance. The package mentions that these drivers are specifically for Ilco locks - do they mention this just to cover their posterior? It seems to me that these should make any lock much more resistant, so it may be a case of "We only guarantee these pins for Kaba Ilco brass locks, anything else you're on your own". What do you think? Has anyone else tried this? Even if it's not perfect, If it makes it more difficult to bump, it may be worth using these pins.

Put them into a couple of Schlage deadbolts a year or more ago and they work just fine. Probably just covering themselves legally.

Pin diameter amongst standard pin tumbler manufacturers/systems are nearly identical (hence universal pin kits). I've used them on other cylinders with the same positive experiences as Jacob.

They're saying they're specifically for Ilco because more than likely they a) don't want any liability b) they don't want to offer tech support for other manufacturer's products and c) want you to buy their cylinders.

I sort of figured that, especially since the CLK "security pin" kit includes them. I took a GMS KIK cylinder and left only two pins. I could open it with a pick gun before, but with two pins, I could open it mostly with no bump halt pin, but very rarely once it was installed. If I tried to use the gun as I normally do, it never opened. Also, I could tell it was much harder to pick with that pin installed. Since the spring is so strong, I'm worried about the core being worn down by the top pin, but for a residential lock it's probably going to be OK. Thanks for your feedback!

Ditto on what everyone else had said. All the locks ilco makes are copies of one manufacturer or another. Even their own line of cylinders are based on Lockwood's depth and spacing data.
