and that ALOA search portal usually sucks. I know Sherman Lock & Safe on Moody St in Waltham Mass is an ALOA member, but cannot find them on the site by business name or ZIP code search..

The BBB is merely a marketing agency that utilizes a unique trick

Maybe I am missing the "uniqueness" of the BBB.

Is there anything more than the classic guild-type racket where it is really just about extorting money and then hardly protect you when it matters and not investigating and taking care of a real issue when it comes to quality control?

Love to know more about their issues. Always tried to keep my distance from anything that comes with a membership fee, but I love specifics.

There is also your local 'chamber of commerce', I gave mine a try a couple of years ago, after they found me a really good job one day & I paid up for a year, the price was almost = what a local half-space phonebook ad costs for a year--I didn't get a second good job until my second year though, so I let my membership lapse

I guess I'm still not over learning the BBB were in it only for themselves and I've had many years--
I do like that your desire of a legitimate source of info would benefit all real locksmiths

Okay...
You've had a bad experience with them. I get it.

I'm not thin skinned,
So No apologies needed.

When I was checking out all sorts of contractors for my house  (at purchase),
I found out that typing  ", BBB"  after company name would lead me to the page where complaint letters were entered (& generalized), about 80+% of the time, if there were any.

After reading, I would make my own decisions.
(0 complaints [&types] in 15+ years -vs- 16 in18 months)

(Could give examples / no free advertising)

I know that BBB is nothing more than a TOOL
(Only 2 o's), & should be used according.

Simple as that.

And to those I offend,
Sorry it comes naturally.
(Not intentionally, normally)

How do you guys feel about places like Angie's List when it compares to something a being a BBB listed/reviewed?

I heard Angies is just a place picky house wives get to lodge complaints against contractors and tradesmen when they dont get their way. Kind of like holding a 5 star rating above your Uber driver or screwing a restaurant with a bad Yelp review.

Your thoughts on this?

PS I also need to fork this into its own thread since I think i caused this derailmemt of the original Schlage lock thread. :)

Yeah, guess we ran this train off the tracks.

Ang's lst, BBB, & anything else...
Just another socket in same drawer,
or grains in the salt shaker.

You are correct, MANY entries are from disgruntled people having a bad day & sharing with others, cause they didn't get their way, as they know; "they're always right,"  "they know exactly how should've been done,"  "shouldn't of cost extra"...

As for, moving from the "me" generation, to the "snowflake" generation (can't take any heat & meltdown @ slightest friction) we have to be more vigilant in our searches, now more than ever.

As It's the responsibility of the person looking up (whatever), to realize that what's written is a puzzle piece & not a tablet of the 10 commandments...
Maybe, Sometimes we all don't realize were coming across looking like 'we think we're Moses'.

Yeah, can be viewed as a blasphemous extreme of viewing.
But don't have time to ramble on,
(Doubt it's holding that much interest)
& as think this horse has been beaten well beyond death...  I'll let it lay mutilated.

Oh, I've gotten bad reviews because I cut a brass key instead of a plated key. The plated key worked perfectly but the customer saw hundreds of nickel plated keys in my shop and wanted his cut on one of those shiny nickel ones Even though I explained that a Chrysler key couldn't be used to duplicate his Dexter key I still ended up getting a negative Google review.

As a consumer, I generally tend to ignore outliers. If I see multiple negative reviews or a pattern emerging, yeah sure, but one or two? There are miserable people out there that will complain about anything or refuse to acknowledge their responsibility in a situation. One example that comes to mind is people complaining about a locksmith's after hour rates - you're kidding me right? Get off of your high horse of trying to dictate what a businesses' prices should or shouldn't be. This is America, you have a choice. Don't be petty, shop elsewhere if you don't like it. No one forced you to lock yourself out at 2 AM on a Tuesday.
