Help identifying a couple of keyways...

Postby nxasdf » 20 Jul 2017 10:00

Hey all,
I posted here a while ago about identifying an Abus keyway so I trust this is the correct place to post!
Ok, so, this is the second time I've ran into this particular keyway issue on two separate occasions so I feel compelled to ask now.

I picked up a bunch of used padlocks and I'm trying to identify what key blank is suitable for this keyway. I have no suitable blanks that fit. I've asked my local locksmiths to no avail, one suggested it's part of a master key system but that's not possible as it contains no master wafers...? It belongs in the Union family I'm sure. I've even gone through the struggle of using a UNI32 which doesn't fit unless you mill a sloped grove into it, and yet the blade isn't tall enough for 2 super high cuts. Doesn't even look like a complicated keyway really.

And here is a similar keyway that looks like it would use the same basic key to the one above but are totally different Union padlocks and again with no master wafers inside, and completely different bitting.

I think a lot of these have those U-numbered keys but can't find any matches online.

Another type of padlock I spotted recently when I was in Lithuania were used on their substations. I've no interest in their substations obviously because I don't want to die but I was peeking at their padlocks and struggling to understand what exactly they were and how they operated. My girlfriend and I went to about 5 locksmiths there and they couldn't tell me anything (but they did sell a fantastic selection of high security locks that I picked up for practice). These padlocks look relatively cheap, but look like they use some kind of radial key, no visible pins, couldn't tell what part moved as I didn't have anything with me and didn't really want to be seen :) their police scare me, haha. I did some research and found a Lithuanian construction company sells something similar looking but different core/mechanism. I can't find anything about them. A friend of mine suggested they use those ordinary utility keys or something but these secure 44,000 Volt substations so I highly doubt that.

Thanks for any pointers.
Kind regards.

The key grabs the center post and pulls it up. Definitely don't play with them.

The first looks like Arrow. The second possibly like an oddball Yale.

The first 2 keyways are both on Union bronze padlocks. I presume both keyways belong to Union, I just can't identify which they are.

Are you 100% on this? Is there somewhere I can find this kind of lock? Perhaps a name or model to start with? What would the key look like? If it grabs the center post then there are moving parts on the key?

Thank you for responses.

I think I may have found the blank required...

Silca YA86 / JMA YA-39D

I'll buy a bunch and see how it goes.

Just a quick update. Sorry for bump, I do apologise.

That key type was correct, fits perfectly.

My next quest is finding out the spacing and depths of this key type. InstaCode doesn't appear to list the JMA or Silca key type.
If anyone has space/depth info on this, that would be great.

Kind regards,
