Need help opening two locked metal boxes

Postby R_K » 17 Jul 2019 14:32

Howdy! Recently while clearing out my grandparents house, I found two old metal boxes in his office. There locked and I have no key. They seem to have something in them, so I feel I better take a gander. I'm not holding my breath on finding a lost copy of Action Comics #1 though. Maybe the boxes themselves are worth something on eBay. Who knows.

Here are some picture. The locks say "Eagle Lock Company Terryville Connecticut". When I look inside the lock, there is a small hole in the middle, and some type of odd shaped metal at the top that no doubt is turned by the key and allows it to be opened, but what do I know. If I knew, I wouldn't be here, would I.

I've tried a screwdriver, and paper clip and a zip tie, and a toothpick, all courtesy of YouTube. Nothing. Hopefully one of you has a great idea of how to proceed next.

Thanks for any help you can throw my way.

(I left the images as full sized, about 2mb per image. Was that correct, or should I have made them smaller?)

I *believe* your keys are something like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/143329473562

Either buy those or try to make your own from some metal and a file or Dremel tool.

Squelchtone. Thanks for the ebay link. I won the auction and when the keys arrive will see if they work. I'll let you know if it works out.

They look like pretty simple locks. Just a step above a latch. You may not have been able to pick them because they were old and lubricated, so you couldn't get the leverage to turn the bolt. The keys should work fine, or you could file them to fit.

I'm not sure how much users are supposed to help, but...

If you were simply sticking things in the hole and turning, that won't work. The hole in the front serves as a mechanism to 'ward' off that type of attack. Googling 'warded lock' might help to better visualize what's going on in there.

If the key fails (and, for others that find this place as a google search response) bend a small "L" shape into a solid paperclip (the ones with the segment crimps are useless for this purpose). If you have a ziptie that fits the width of the hole, CAREFULLY using some kind of snipper thing, come back a distance equal to the length of the lock chamber (from the back to the front), then snip out a small notch on each side.

This should allow you to insert the tooth-like end into the lock chamber and gently turn. It also may snap off in there, so...

You could also try a piece of credit card-like plastic cut in the same shape.

Basically, you are rotating some internal parts so that you can push or slide the button and release the latch.

We appreciate it when users help. :D
