Medeco lock for Safemark safe

Postby whoppr » 25 Apr 2020 18:18

Hi there.

I bought a Safemark safe at a hotel surplus store. I believe its a safemark E 5.1 safe as best I can tell. Everything works great, but would like to install a new Medeco override lock in case I forget the code to unlock it.

I have taken out the Medeco lock successfully and reinstalled it successfully but the safe came with no keys. I am trying to figure out how to replace this with a valid key and lock. I bought a lock on Ebay which fits fine in the safe with the key however, the lock I took out has a brass piece that does not fit the lock I ordered (I would have hoped it came with the brass piece which seems specific to a customer?).

Any guidance how to piece this together so I can install something is greatly appreciated. Chances are I would never need this but would like this in my back pocket in case I fat finger a code or forget.

I can send pictures of the lock assembly if it helps. I looked on Medeco and not sure on the exact model (extension lock). Safemark has a lock that is orderable and a key that is overable but think this is probably customer specific.

Thanks in advance.

Hello

We are going to need to see pics so we can tell what you mean.

Upload them to imgbb or imgur and copy/paste the links here

Im guessing the cam or tailpiece on the back of the cylinder doesn't match your mechanism.

Thanks

Here are the pics... Apologies for the delay. The one on the right is what I took out of the same. Brass piece that fits with the rest of the lock. The one on the left is what I got off Ebay. It came with the key but do not know what I need for the equivalent brass piece. Maybe I am stuck. Again, this is a backup plan for me in case I forgot the code.

The keying for lack of better terminology seems to be simple for the one I got off Ebay whereas what was in the same is not.

Thanks

No chance that the keyway is the same, I guess. Unlikely, but have to ask.

Next thing I'd try is to see if you could cut or file the new lock to be close enough to the old lock for the brass piece (tailpiece/actuator) to transfer over.

I will try that... thank you... Maybe get a metal blade for a dremel or oscillating tool?

Yes, or a file. Not the tiny needle files. Something a bit larger and heavier to handle removing a larger amount of metal.
