Thank you for the S&G lube guide - I'll be looking for a lube to close this puppy up when.

Is Tri-flow still considered as a wipe down lube??

Thanks,

They probably meant Brake Cleaner

Just trying to understand better.

Could use someone's knowledge and experience. My 70-80's S&G Diebold lock lost several numbers on the third wheel. Tried to open it, had it for years with no problems, but - it would not open. I had to cut the back of this teller's safe to get to the lock. Found that the 1st and 2nd wheel retained their numbers. But, the third wheel combination had changed without my efforts. It was mentioned that if I spun the dial too hard or too fast that this may have happened.

I purchased a change key, and wished to wipe down the wheels and lube where things should be lubed. Thank you for the link! However, it appears that the wheel pack is secured as a group on the dial tube via a thin clip, spring clip, retainer clip of sorts. My concern is how to remove this retainer ring so that I can inspect the wheels for damage. Or, is this ring intended to render the lock as "un-serviceable". Not to be mess with!

I know the 3rd wheel changed numbers, because I can see the gate miss the fence with the original number. And, I can see the gate line up with the fence and the dial reads 7 numbers off from original combination for that wheel. And, I've dialed this new combo over several days.

In your experience, should I just lube as shown in the S&G instructions, and use my change key for a new combo. Or, is it best to inspect these wheels for wear , chips ..etc. Everything turns smooth and even. Dial turns freely.

Wasn't my idea for you to take apart your lock, my idea was to change to a new combination.

There are no user-servicable parts inside your lock

Bill - Evening,

Once I weld the back plate back on the safe, I'd like be have been pretty sure that nothing on the lock was damaged in my spinning the dial fast. I have had no other comments on my posts, so I have to assume that your mention of lock likely to have skipped a couple of teeth on the changing jaws is the only explanation available. Either way - my intent is to assure myself that this would not happen again. And, then there is the question of - were any parts of the wheels damaged in my playfulness.

I ask these questions to learn more and understand things better.

What do you make of the wheel pack retaining ring?
Have you seen these before - are you familiar with them?
Are they removable?
Is it recommended NOT to be removed and leave the wheel pack alone?

I have no problem closing this puppy back up. Lube according to S&G recommendations, change the combination and play with it for a few days to check reliability.

It's a learning curve for me. This is why I ask for ideas, opinions and experience.

I do so much appreciate your time. If you feel that this puppy is best closed up with a changed combo - that is what i will do.

I'll await your reply.

Thank you.

Let's say you find you do have a wheel that is slipping upon taking apart your lock
You can't buy a new replacement wheel anyway, so why even bother?

I've taken plenty of locks apart but without replacement parts there really is little point, unless you want to file the gate on each wheel a bit wider, for instance (not that you should do this)

Way I see it, your next step is changing the combo & trying to dial the new combo 10 times to see if it quit slipping

If it doesn't stop slipping then at that point I would replace the lock but if you want to make a big project, someone on here may sell you wheels for your lock

Morning - This is logical. It makes sense. Unserviceable parts, no individual parts available. I get it.

Ordered some S&G recommended lubricant. When it comes in - I'll lube according to S&G instructions, close this puppy up and play with it until I am confident things are working well. No more fast dial spins!

QUESTION: I read somewhere that there are "zones" or "blocks" of dial numbers that should not be used as one creates their 3 number combination. Are you familiar with these number zones or number blocks that should not be used in creating a combination?

Again - my appreciation.

You really don't even need the lube. Your wheels are all brass, which is a self-lubricating metal

Bill - I did not think about brass on brass. Yes! It is ok - I connected with MBAUSA and purchased a small tub of Aeroshell-22. The only shame here is the micro amount of lube I'd be using.

I'll leave the lock open until the Aeroshell arrives. My last purchase came in a few days.

Brass on brass - and I was laboring over the proper lubricant.

Thank you again -

Evening
