Trying to unlock old steamer trunk.

Postby itm60 » 7 Jan 2026 12:37

We just retrieved an old steamer trunk from the attic which I bought in the USA in the early 1980s, and my wife pushed the lock closed without realising that I no longer had the key for it. Can anyone shed any light on what these locks look like on the inside, as I need to try to open it.

I've tried emulating the screwdriver technique from this video:

...but didn't have any luck. The trunk is empty but I'd really like to open it with a view to either using it or selling it.

I believe a Long Lock T46 key will open it. Can be bought on Etsy for around $4 or Amazon and Ebay for more. If lucky, you may find one on the key rack in an older hardware store.

Many thanks for that. I googled the T46K and managed to find a key that looked just like it in one of my bedroom drawers. The trunk is now open!
