Old Weslock handleset

I have 30 yr old Weslock interconnected handleset similar to current Lexington. I'd like to replace the cylinder with a more secure pick/bump resistant version. Is this possible and how can I do that? Thanks.

Wouldn't it be easier to replace the entire handleset? If not, can you post a picture of the current one?

John, the handle has an unusual 2 7/8 spacing between the interconnected latch and bolt so it can only be replaced by another Weslock far as I can tell. The current Weslocks do no not appear to be any more secure. It would be a big job to redrill the door for different spacing. It's a double door so would need a dummy handle with total cost around $300 so I'm hoping there's a cheaper way to upgrade the lock. Will post image if I can figure out how.

Do you happen to have a pic of the keyhole so we can see the type of cylinder it is? Looks like a rim cylinder in which case you can probably swap it out for something modern or more high security.

remove the 4 phillips screws, lift off the plate, and you should be able to lift out the whole cylinder.

It doesn't exactly look like that. The outer ring is part of the handle. I may be using "cylinder" incorrectly. I'm referring to the thing in the center that has the key hole. Will have to wait til tomorrow to disassemble it.

hmm, then I wonder if it is a KIK knob cylinder instead.

Had to search for meaning of KIK but this one doesn't match any of your measurements plus has a cam on the end. Any hope?

that's very interesting, but I am not familiar with that kind of cylinder. perhaps one of our resident locksmiths has seen this sort before?

You should be able to replace the pins in the cylinder, to make it harder to pick, but it won't meet your goal of making it more bump resistant. Based on your previous comments, it sounds like you've already investigated similar looking alternatives to no avail.

I don't know how real the bump threat is but since it's been all over the news and internet my concern is every kid is going to try it. Weslock has a smaller integrated set with horizontal handle that will fit and takes a Schlage or Kwikset lock and they have bump proof versions. Right now that looks like my only option.

I'd recommend against getting the Kwikset Smartkey, it will fail or fall apart, even if it is bump proof, it isnt very well made. Schlage is bumpable as well.
