Someone here may know, but in the meantime you may get some more traction if you also ask this over at the http://antique-locks.com forum. We deal more with hobby lockpicking and less with old steamer trunk locks as they are a different animal compared to the pin tumbler locks most of us practice on.

good luck

There are plenty here that are “that skilled” but we aren’t sure what you are asking? If you need it opened or a key made take it to a locksmith. If you are asking how to pick it, I doubt anyone will explain it to you since no one here can really verify you are the owner of this item.

It is a lever lock. You can try making wire tools, or you can search eBay or elsewhere online for keys. If you can find a blank that fits, you can impression a key. There are a threads on impressioning.

Most of the time, if I need to open one of these it is because someone needs a key, so impressioning is the method.

Its unfortunate that your immediate mental image of a lockpicking website is a bunch of criminals without ethics trading info on how to break into things. Do you think your locksmith is a criminal? Because a lot of locksmiths hang out here talking about picking. We also have police here who like to pick, and then we have people who enjoy puzzles and collecting locks.

The reason tjohn said what he did is because we actually have ethics and scruples and wouldnt want to teach someone how to break in somewhere like a steamer trunk or safe and for instance have a teenager get their hands on his grandpas ww2 colt 45. So please try to see if from where we are standing.

Also please have a little more patience, we dont have a bunch of researchers just standing by to answer questions, people have lives, work, family and drop in the forum once a day or so to see whats new so coming back every 3 to 6 hours hoping someone posted exact instructions to help you open the trunk is unrealistic.

Simply put, there are no quick tricks to opening that, youre not gonna bend a paper clip and jiggle it like in the movies. Theres nothing we can quickly teach you unless you have a few weeks to spare learning impressioning and smoking blank keys. Honestly the best bet is to bring trunk to local locksmith shop, pay $40 bucks and they'll get it open via try out keys, picking, bypass, or impressioning methods.

Good luck

PS you keep calling it a T17.. in your pic I swear it says 17 T

you know for the military during ww2 to send out over 2 million of these steamer trunks you think it would be easy to find a key that would fit it or someone to pick it.
