Old solid brass WB padlock with IC (how to)

Hey guys, this is the first lock I have been given to make keys for and it is a removable core lock with what looks like a small version of the BEST door lock I have (I think A key way) Now I have always heard that if you pick it to control it should have a code inside to have keys made.. Well that is not the case here... If I have depth keys Im sure I could figure out the depths to cut to make the "Control" key but not an "Open" key.

I thought that the plug would be removable when the core is out of the lock but it wont come out of the control sleeve (the pins come down when I turn it upside right so it shouldn't have any pins at the control sleeve stopping it (should it?)

Any thoughts as to how to proceed from here? I need to get keys made so I can give it back to the locksmiths customer in a couple weeks...

Another question... Can you impression one of these locks? Im thinking no since it has multiple shear lines and I could impression 5 to open and 1 to control and it wont work.

Anyway, it 'requires' special tools to take apart this lock to make keys. Your best bet is to take it to a locksmith who works with BEST, and have them make keys. There are some methods to make keys without taking them apart once they are out of the lock, but it will take a good working knowledge of how the locks work. Planning on doing a write-up on the method in the near future. To do it 'quickly' by the method, you would need ten blanks, each with the tip cut to a different depth, and a shim from a security tag.

Well crap! I pick locks and rekey them for a lockal locksmith (key duplicator) but without a code on the core he wouldnt be able to do it. Im not getting paid to do work for him.. he just keeps me supplied with locks to pick so I have something to occupy my mind to take it off the pain. Maybe I should tell him he needs to buy a working core with keys to put into it..

Sounds like you need to do a search on Best style locks. There have been many posts regarding this topic and you have not even started to do your homework.

Sound like the 'locksmith' who supplies you with locks is not a locksmith but a key duplicator.

If he needs this lock keyed, you should probably take it to a locksmith who is experienced in working with SFIC locks and get the job done quickly and correctly.

I am not trying to rain on your picnic, but that lock is a little out of your league right now.

I have been using the search function for 2 days now looking up any information I can on Best locks.. The only thing is I get every post where someone has typed "Hey whats the best lock for me to buy" Its hard to filter through all the threads I dont want to read and ones that will give me the information I seek.

I understand that you need a special jig to repin these locks because you need to pop out the plugs at the top of the lock and how the 2 shearlines work, so I have done some homework as you say and if I had some key blanks I am good enough at reading the pins when they are in a turned plug that I can file a key that will work. Nothing is out of my league when I put my mind to it...

My question was only to see if the information I had received through reading and on youtube was correct or incorrect in reguards to being able to disassemble the lock when you have it picked to Control.

I do want to thank you for putting in the "SFIC" into your post as this helped with the search.... I have severe Fibromyalgia and suffer what is called "fibro fog" where my brain stops being able to think of words that I want. I have been trying to think of this for the past 2 days and couldn't get it into my head.. kind of sucks for a guy with a 168 IQ not to be able to think of something, It is extremely frustrating for me so I hope people can give me a little leeway if I ask a stupid question when I should be able to find the answer.

I have shimmed both the "open" and "control" shear lines and have a few keys to play with, so now all I need is to find someone that has depth keys for the SFIC A keyway I guess.. the keys that fit say A1114A on the left and BE2 on the right.

Now that I have picked the small Best core I guess I can get back to work on the big core one that I have not been able to pick in the last month!!
