Key Won't work

Postby shadel01 » 10 Oct 2015 17:21

Hello everyone, I just got into lock picking and got my first lock pick set today. First thing I did was take a trigger lock for a gun and easily picked that by raking it and took about 5 seconds. Practiced a few times and had no problems. I moved to something harder which was the deadbolt lock to my front door. I tried raking it and surprisingly it was easy as well. However as I was turning the plug the deadbolt was not moving. So I turned it all the way and found that the deadbolt was definitely not going to move. I reset it again and tried again and found that something is wrong. So I tried to put my key into turn the plug, I found that my key no longer works anymore. My assumption that I screwed up the pins or rotated something inside. I will go to the locksmith to see if they can fix it but i'll see if anyone on this forum has any advice. I ended up swapping my balcony lock with my front door.

Thanks.

Hello, and welcome :)
What brand is your lock? Is the cylinder stuck at 180 degrees from where it should be? If so, the driver(top) pins have caught in the bottom of the keyway. This can be fixed by using the back of your pick to lift the drivers. Put it in the bottom of the keyway, press against the bible(top of the cylinder, not the plug), and turn. Squelchtone had a diagram for this problem, maybe he can post it. Bosnianbill also did a youtube video on this. Here's a famous thread about this problem http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=14143&hilit=
If your key goes in to the lock, but doesn't work, you might have lost a wafer or something.
This is why it's one of locksport's rules is to not pick locks in use.

Sounds like his description is that the plug is turning, but the bolt is not retracting.

We said it before, and will undoubtedly say it again... Do not pick locks in use. As you have now learned, picking can cause a lock to fail.

It sounds like while picking, you pushed the tailpiece off the back of the plug. You will have to take the deadbolt off the door and retrieve the tailpiece. Put it back on the back of the lock, then reassemble. Then don't pick that lock again! Go to a Home Depot and spend $15-$20 on a deadbolt (not a SmartKey) that you can pick.

Thanks for the quick reply. I am not sure of the brand as I cant find any markings besides made in Taiwan, a Square and a S. I think I got the wording wrong, it was the plug that rotated not the cylinder but as far as I know it is not stuck at 180 degrees as I rotated the plug back, then again I am new to this and maybe it is stuck there. Thanks for the information, i'll try later to fix this problem. Though I am still curious as I rotated the plug the deadbolt did not move as if it was disconnected from something else.

Interesting... It's a Schlage KIK cylinder... The problem isn't the tailpiece, it's not stuck at 180, but the key doesn't work. It must have lost a master wafer when you picked it. Does the key still go in all the way?
If you need to get it working again, you should take it to a locksmith and have him repin it. If your in an apartment or something, and it's part of a master key system it could get more complicated.

So far I put the key in and tried to pick from behind the plug. I was able to hit something, possibly another pin and rotated it but i cant seem to do it again. I am thinking that there is another pin there that was not meant to be used as the key does not go far enough to push it and that may have triggered it to lock.

Edit: Yep key goes all the way in. If i dont get this sorted i'll definately get it to the locksmith.

Edit2: Ok nevermind I just took out the whole core, springs and all so now this lock is useless =P Thanks for the help.

If you find the parts you can easily reload everything with an 'aa battery' and a tweezer
