Rekeying Schlage lock

Postby mmcminn » 29 Apr 2016 15:20

I've been rekeying my homes locks and had no problem with the defiant deadbolts but the front door is a schlage lock. In the instructions it says to depress the spring pin to unscrew the plug cap (i think that is the right name) however on my lock there is not a pin to depress. there is what looks like a pin but if you can see inside from the edge it is solid metal. How do I get this off? http://i66.tinypic.com/155jnn8.jpg sorry the pictureis so large, I cant fgure out how to shrink it

does the front of your cylinder have a + sign above the keyhole by any chance?

that's not a normal pin tumbler lock, it is rekeyed using a special procedure.

Please see here:
Schlage SecureKey breakdown http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=47991#p362681

here is a video on how to rekey/reprogram the lock

EDIT:
here's a better video, the other guy is rushing and doesn't have the keys in the frame very well:

hope this helps,

they sell new key kits, but I think you might need to have your old old brass key and blue key before the new blue key will work. if you have the brass key but not the old blue key, I think a locksmith or maybe home depot can copy your brass key cuts onto a blue blank.

Personally I would replace it with a standard Schlage cylinder.

AFAIK the blue keys are discontinued. Schlage was sued by Kwikset and had to pull their product off of the market.

Replace with a pin tumbler model would be my advice. I have made a pin tumbler cylinder work but it is not easy to get the rotation of the tailpiece sorted, so would not recommend it.

From what I hear, the patent on SmartKey is expired and Schlage is bringing back the Secure Key

Change the cylinder out with an Ilco K500 - there is a deadbolt tail piece in the package, use that and the "ring" which comes with the thing - this is the same as the new Schlage and others who are using this type of lock... it works well.

That is what I hear from my local lockie friends. They say that the lawsuit by Kwikset stopping the Secure Key was the best thing to happen to Schlage in ages.

A POS indeed. Even before they inevitably failed, SecureKey cylinders just felt plastic-y and crunchy when used.

They don't even last as long as Smartkeys?
