can wafers be moved over for motorcycle gas cap ?

Postby seanmachado » 16 Jul 2016 16:42

Hi everyone,

sorry to post when the rules state "no automotive" but I don't see anywhere else to post.

I have an old motorcycle (1979 Suzuku gs850G).

The bike was purchased used, and had 3 seperate keys, 1 each for ignition, gas tank and seat/helmet lock.

I purchased a used "matched set" of ignition, gas cap,and seat lock recently from ebay.

I found after purchase that while the key would fit all 3 items, the gas cap lock had someone try to "force it" and inserting the key was very difficult. The "dust cap" was all bent up, the only way the key could go in was to stick it at the top and try to "pry back" the sliding piece that keeps dust/dirt out of the lock.

I managed to remove the cylinder from the gas cap, then pry off the offending chrome dust cover and the key can be inserted without issue now, but the top of the lock is exposed. Also, it turns a little too far to the "open position."

I have another lock with a different key, works smoothly.

(Im not a locksmith.)

Can I as a non locksmith expect to be able to remove the wafers from the beat up cap lock and move them the the other one to "re key" it to match ? am I likely biting off more than I can chew ?

thanks

Should be an easy thing to do. I would say yes.

Then you don't post it here, period.

Thats like parking in the fire lane because the parking lot was full but you really needed to park somewhere.

Locking this thread as it seems to have been answered already.
