Assistance with antique English Writing Box lock mechanism

The images show the inside mechanism, the outside key hole, top and bottom of locking mechanism, and the two keys found in the writing box. When I got the box, the locking mechanism was in "locked" state, not allow box to close fully. I removed the lock mechanism from the box, unscrewed the cased, and manually shifted the locking mechanism to the "unlocked" position, allowing the box to properly close.

The keys I have, however, do not lock or unlock the box that I can tell. Due to the age of the box, I might not be operating the key accurately, which I why I am posting this this forum. Should the round opening at the base of the key fit over the circular rod in the key hole, allowing the notched pins on the key to turn within the case and push the lever up and over the shift the locking bars to the left and right?

The hole at the base of these keys are too small to fit over the small circular rod/bar in the keyhole. BUT the keys seem to go with the box.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Sounds like you mostly have the concept correct. Since those two keys will NOT fit over the center post, they are the wrong keys. I hate to modify old original keys like those because they are so unique but will do so as needed.

Find another blank from a locksmith to work with. If you really can't, the larger key might be able to have the hole in the end drilled out larger so it will fit over the post. In order for the key to fit completely into the lock, 'ward cuts' must be filed onto the side of the blade of the key that align exactly with the three rings on the inside back of the lock. Are there any similar rings on the removed front cover? If so similar 'ward cuts' would also be required just to allow the blank to turn.

The outer edge of the blade can then lift the spring-loaded bar and slide the lock bolts open and shut.
