Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Help Me Open an AmSec Round Door Safe...

Postby gordonquixote » 6 Apr 2014 5:59

I bought this safe about 10 years ago from a demolition contractor that was tearing a business down. It was locked and I don't have the combo. I've thought about searching property records for the previous owner but Im guessing the tenant (restaurant) only leased the building so tracking the combo down seems tough.

It has been taking up space in my carport and Im ready to either take it to the scrap yard or MUCH more preferably, get it open and use it.

I can send serial numbers and my identification via PM to verify my situation.

The safe is a round door AmSec (mfg code THX).

Can I get into the safe without damaging it so it can be re-used?

Being a commercial model, would AmSec possibly have the combo on file?

Approx cost to have it manipulated by a pro?

Can I do it myself?

Value of the safe with a combination?

I've read quite a bit on the topic but the best info was on this site so here I am.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Hey , How you doing?

First, off, the safe is sideways, just in case you didn't know...lol

Amsec, or Star Door . 80's ish.

Can I get into the safe without damaging it so it can be re-used?

If you know how to manipulate group 2 locks, shouldn't be hard. Providing it's in good mechanical shape. Some of the newer versions of this safe have Manipulation 'Proof' Locks and may be a bit harder, this does not look like one. So I believe it's an older model, or that the lock has been changed.

Nope, The combo could have been changed by anybody with a change key.

Don't be surprised to dish out 200-300 , maybe you'll find a deal, perhaps there is only a few safe techs in your area who charge more.

Can I do it myself?
Depends, are you willing to learn a trade? (If you don't already know it), I wouldn't learn to be a plumber just because I had a leak in the pipes. If it's something I wanted to do for a long time, something I enjoyed. like the way I feel about safes, The answer is yes, you can. If you have other stuff to do, I suggest calling in the pros.

Value of the safe with a combination?
Not very much, it looks in rough shape, but I'm sure there is somebody who would pay for it. How much is the question. I would pay maybe $100 for it, (unless you were delivering it) Most of the jewelers I know hate those safes, because the tiny round door only allows certain sized objects in a rather large safe.

I've read quite a bit on the topic but the best info was on this site so here I am.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

There you have it, hope I helped, any questions, just PM , me, Thanks

I have been a locksmith for over 20 years.

I would just like to correct the gentlemen that said you could not get the combination from the manufacturer. I was registered with Amsec and had several situations through out my career that I had to call for a combination from Amsec. Mickey, the lady at the time who handled combinations, got so use to me call her she knew who it was by my voice.

Any ways. two things have to be going your way for it to work out. First the combination had to have been left on the original combination. Second the serial number has to be on the safe. If you don't see it Amsec , as a back up, would print the serial number on the back of the handle in case someone pulled off the one on the safe. Now you have to get a hold of a locksmith that is registered with Amsec and have him call the manufacturer for the combination.

Now if the combination had been left alone there is a really good chance that they will have the combination, Amsec keeps really good records. The downside is you will have to have a locksmith come out and verify the safe is yours, you will have to pay him for his time ( whether it works or not! ) That in itself may keep your from taking this venture.

Good Luck.
