Unusual Chubb lock

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Unusual Chubb lock

Postby EvilDMP » 18 Oct 2014 12:38

I picked up an old safe a few years ago and it has been sitting on a shelf in my garage ever since. It's small, but extremely heavy.

I have been tidying up today, and was reminded of the safe.

It seems to have quite an unusual lock: http://tinypic.com/r/2i6jcld/8

What's this lock called? And what's the pattern for dialling in the numbers? (I have no idea what those numbers are, by the way, so it's unlikely I'll ever open it!).

Thanks!

Not a safe expert but, I don't understand what you mean by "unusual". I just looks like a Chubb combination safe lock.

If you mean that there is a blank between the numbers, I believe that that is just there so that you don't place a final number close to where the fence drops into the cam. This is a condition avoided on all safe locks. Sargent and Greenleaf tell you not to make your final digit between 95 and 20. My guess is by putting that blank there it avoids worrying about such errors.

If it is a three wheel, it should be the standard:

4 times left to the first number
3 times right to the second number
2 times left to the third number
1 time right until the dial stops, continue turning to retract the bolt.

Yes, that's exactly it. I've never seen one like that before. Do you know what model the lock is?

that's a very old lock, most folks wont know off hand which model number it is.

I have an antique S&G model 6700 (not to be confused with the newer 6730) which from 100 to 20 on the dial has stamped "not to be used by last tumbler", but instead of a crow's foot for the opening index, I have a star.

The guys at antique-locks.com forum might be able to ID it for you if no one here can.

edit: Andy at All Experts gave someone else advice on a Chubb safe lock, notice the dial has the same forbidden zone as yours: http://en.allexperts.com/q/Locksmithing ... n-safe.htm

good luck,

That is a Chubb, but Kromer also makes dials with a gap between 100 and 0.
