Turn out a simple sheet metal screw on the draw had worked itself out, bumping against the frame, and now was almost entirely out! Reinstalled w a little Loctite, and all is well.
So if you get a call for a safe where the lock is fine, but the drawers resist opening and closing, take a look here.

P.S. It was actually the right side screw that walked out, but I couldn't get a good photo of that side.
P.P.S. Safe originally had an electronic XO-7 lock, but I heard reports that the orig locks were failing, owing to the 20+ age of the electronics. I replaced it w a standard S&G group 2 mechanical lock. That'll be good for 100 years!
