An Issue w Old Mosler Safes

I've got an old Navy safe, built by Mosler in 1988. For the last few years it's had a sticking point when opening and closing. Felt like a bump. Took the drawers out, lubed everything, no help. Then one day it felt different; there was real resistance on closing. I immediately re-opened and looked, knowing that whatever it was, it had to be fixed or the safe would be out of commission.

Turn out a simple sheet metal screw on the draw had worked itself out, bumping against the frame, and now was almost entirely out! Reinstalled w a little Loctite, and all is well.

So if you get a call for a safe where the lock is fine, but the drawers resist opening and closing, take a look here.

P.S. It was actually the right side screw that walked out, but I couldn't get a good photo of that side.

P.P.S. Safe originally had an electronic XO-7 lock, but I heard reports that the orig locks were failing, owing to the 20+ age of the electronics. I replaced it w a standard S&G group 2 mechanical lock. That'll be good for 100 years!

That looks more like a Class 5 GSA container / file cabinet though vs a normal safe.

Ahhh the old class six Mosler container... How many drill bits I pumped in those things.!

I remember driving halfway around the DC beltway from Andrews AFB to XXXXXX one time because a paper clip had fallen in the drawer track and wouldnt let the drawer close and secure.

Sometimes its the little things.
