Diamond Safe - Nippon Cash Machine

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Diamond Safe - Nippon Cash Machine

Postby texasbudman » 26 Aug 2020 11:12

Greetings from the island of Saipan...
Noob here and first post but I've done a lot of searching and reading...

So here we go... I have an older model Diamond Safe - Nippon Cash Machine Model # 110 Serial #8023 (Japanese Cash Machine)

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction or have information like a users/owners manual???

Bottom line... 1) I'd like to reset the combination AND 2) know a little more about the safe in general.

What I do know is that its like 40 years old, I've contacted Diamond Safe and Nippon Cash Machine in Japan and they can't help me...
The safe came with a building my boss bought and she basically gave it to me... I paid a locksmith to open it and make me a key...
I've had it for a couple years and other than a little bit of surface rust and sun burn from sitting outside a couple of years, she works just fine and now sits inside in air condoning...

Any useful information is appreciated...
Blessings

Hi, unfortunately you did not provide any photos, so I have to hope that the photos I find online are indeed the same as your safe. What I find has a normal key lock and a mechanical combination lock and looks like a fire safe, i.e. it might have some burglary resistance, but it is not really the purpose. To change the combination you need to remove the small cover on the back of the door. What to do next depends on what you find there. With normal key locks there are often paired the most simple combination locks, but Japanese fire safes do often contain locks from Satoh Lock Co.. I doubt you will find any manuals for that safe.

Wow!

This is a copy of a Yale OC-5 including the relock mechanism. It is most probably the first Satoh lock, because it is a true friction fence lock with both gears and no spring. My Satoh Sun 700 has still the gear on the drive cam, but the gear on the fence is gone and instead there is a spring. I have also seen locks where both gears were gone. It is quite nice that Satoh has these clips on the cover screws. Never seen that anywhere else.

On the cover plate are three wheels. To change the combination you need to remove them. For this you need to remove the round clip. Something pokey like a stiff needle or a thin nail should do the trick. These clips are quite easy to remove. When you remove piece after piece (wheels and washers) keep track of their order. Maybe put them in a line on the table. The wheels are probably numbered to help reassembly. Each wheel consists of two separable parts, the outer ring with the numbers and the inner ring. On the inner ring is one notch that is important to you. On the visible wheel there is the notch at 73. This wheel is the last number in your combination. The middle wheel is the middle number and the wheel next to the cover the first number. So the procedure to change the combo is to separate the two parts by pressing with your thumbs on the inner ring on the un-numbered side, then move the notch to the desired number and press the inner ring back into the outer ring (obviously from the numbered side). Then put back the parts onto the cover post, finally the clip, Then screw the cover onto the lock. To open the lock you need to dial reverse to the normal order. Normal order is right/clockwise for the final unlock. With this lock nothing will happen. You need to turn it left/counter-clockwise. You can try this without the wheel pack. So to open you need to dial (at least) 4 times right to the first number, (exactly) 3 times left to the second, 2 times right to the third and then left to open.

Usual warning for anyone changing a combination: when trying the new combination do not close the safe! Try many times without closing the safe, so if something is wrong with your combination, you can unscrew the lock and fix it :)

Thanks! I just wanted to write the same. It is inexcusable that I forgot to write that.
