Diabold in floor safe - our deceased brother’s

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Diabold in floor safe - our deceased brother’s

Postby ranchbarbie » 17 Mar 2022 10:14

Greetings from Colorado (safe is in Washington state).

This is a bit of a sad story. My brother recently passed away suddenly. He was an off the grid / hermit kind of guy, lived alone with no wife or offspring which leads me to our predicament. My brother went in to his trailer to look for a will and any valuables to secure. He found this old safe (see pics). I believe it’s a Diabold but unsure of age etc. We’re hoping to access it in order to find any signs of a will. Local locksmith says we need a court order to have them work on opening. There was no slip of paper left and we’ve tried various combinations we thought might be relevant to him. No luck. We’re trying to minimize cost and legal council as he had no real valuables or even bank accounts so everything is out of pocket for my family at this point.

1-would a death certificate be appropriate to provide a locksmith to get them to accept the work?
2-does anyone know the default combination we could try?
3-any other advice you could offer in our situation?

Thanks for looking!!

Looks like it's been drilled before.

Maybe by him to get it open? We haven’t done anything to it other than to look for mfg info. Does that compromise the mechanisms?

If it's been drilled in the correct place, a competent safe tech should be able to use a scope to open it. You may want to consult an attorney on the legalities to obtain contents, if any.

Why did someone unbolt everything and remove the dial?

I guess it's the same reason sometimes you see safes with the hinges cut off

Back on topic of getting this safe open. It may be obvious, but bringing it to a safe tech would be a lot cheaper than having him come to your house and open it.

Good luck :)
