Diebold Cashguard Mystery Safe

Hey all, I just picked up a Diebold Cashguard safe. Been sitting behind a barn for a LONG TIME!!! I had a couple questions I could use some help on!!

1. I don't see the index mark on the dial. Is this a dropgate dial? The dial is really crunchy with dirt (its also a fireant nest... YEAY!!!). Or is this a direct action dial? The handle barely moves at all. The locking pin is disengaged on the handle but hardly even a wiggle.
2. When I move the dial, I can't hear or feel a gate at all. But I can't move the handle and cause the dial to lock like most direction action... So is it a direct action or dropgate.

3. IF its a drop gate, I can press the dial in and it pops back up. So is this like a TASO Jewelry safe? You dial the combo, then turn to zero and press the dial to drop the gate, then turn the dial until is locks?? That would be really tough to crack... I just haven't tried to crack one of these so would appreciate all the info I can get....

It has probably a S&G 6770. That lock is like a 6730, but with an additional piece of metal, which allows it to use the opening index for changing.

If the safe is rated for more than a UL TL15 then its quite possible that the lock is a S&G 8500 series which would explain the push in at zero.

Is there anyway to know for sure? Ijust can't hear or feel the gate contact points. No sense trying to manipulate it if I"m not doing it correctly. I do know the dial pushes in about 1/4" and pops back. Maybe its supposed to or maybe its just sloppy... I have a serial number if that might help...

It looks toooo old for an S&G 8500. Does the dial push in at any or all points around the dial or only at zero? If only at zero it may still be an 8500. The lock is most likely a standard 6730 or 6770 as stated. The lock in the handle may have to be picked before the handle can turn at all. If there are no drop points felt at all, I might consider the lock broken. I had one three weeks ago with the lever broken in half. It gave no indications at all. I am barely recovering from the temporary insanity. If you felt a drop point, manipulation would be appropriate; or you could drill from the top and scope the change key hole. This avenue of attack eliminates the hardplate. Good luck!

The dial pushes at ALL points and I dont feel the gate reset like I do on my 8500 when you rotate the dial. Which makes me thing its not. But I wanted some pros to get more info. I'm going to put my dialer on it tonight and see what happens. Doesn't take any of my time...

I am not familiar with the terms direct action and dropgate. Do you mean "direct entry" fence, which this safe is more than likely not, or "spring assisted drop lever" which this safe probably is. Also the index you don't see, that's the "change index" and the mark at 12o'clock is the "opening index"

Regarding the ability to push the dial in, is it possible your dial just has some slop allowing the dial to push in and out, but not to the extent that the 8500 lock pushes in?

I'm used to hearing the click when the 8500 dial is pressed in when the tomahawk drops.

The Cashguards came in old style and new style and were TL-15 or TL-30 rated. This one looks from the few photo like a new style. The only locks I could find in Cashguards are the 6770, Diebold 177 and LG 3330 or 1800. The 6770 was in an old style Cashguard, but the dial looked like this. At this time Group 1 was not required for the TL-15 and TL-30 rated safes.
