Help! Old Diplomat 60 - How to dial a four digit combo??

Postby Sandra » 28 Nov 2021 13:46

Hi,

My dad has an old Diplomat 60 and he can't remember how to unlock it. We have the key and the combination - it's a four number combination. I have googled and visited Diplomat website but can't find anywhere which is the correct way to dial/turn in order to open.

And how do we reset to start from zero? We have tried so many times and I read somewhere that you have to turn counter clockwise several times before you try again. It's this true?

Would love some help! Our old VHS tapes from our family's vacation are inside and I thought to convert them to mp4 files for a xmas gift.

Thanks!!!!

I don't know this safe, but from the type of lock it has ...

There is no starting point. To start reliably the dial has to be turned at least a number of turns. This one explains the opening of a common combination lock: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEYjgOFKR1U I think yours is the same for the first three numbers, but after that you need to turn the dial right to the first time it reaches the fourth number. Then you should be able to turn the key. Because the mechanism does not enforce the dialling direction you can also try the opposite dialling direction for all numbers if the first sequence doesn't work.

The instructions below are for a modern one, but perhaps the same sequence or turns will work on your combination:

That video 00247 posted is great, you should watch that as well.

Hello, have you managed to get the safe open yet? I've got my Dad's old one too with exactly the same contents - old VHS family tapes! I think it was purchased around 1986 Let me know if you need any help opening it (I've only really registered on here to reply to your post, so email me @ oohbratt@blueyonder.co.uk if I can be of any help). Cheers!

Unfortunately the original poster (OP) posted that Sunday afternoon back in November and never came back to follow up.

People who are desperate with something like a locked safe often post their question on half a dozen forums or places like Reddit or in specialty Facebook groups, and once they get their answer at one of those places, they have no need to come back to the others where people have also posted answers and are waiting for the OP to reply or say thanks or follow up that they go their safe open.

Wishing you best of luck opening your Diplomat as well, poke around, perhaps you will find some useful information.
