Found an old floorsafe without a key

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Found an old floorsafe without a key

Hello, I was just wondering if someone would be able to help with a safe that we have in the house currently, its a floorsafe hidden under the stairs and hasnt been opened in 100+ years, so being as curious as I am to see if its empty I thought I would come here and see if I could get advice or help with opening this by myself.

I have no experience with lockpicking or with safes, but with this being more vintage age wise, would something as simple as a skeleton key work? Although I hear they arent universal or would this be something that would need to be picklocked?

Hi Meckii, opening it without using brute force is not an easy task. At the beginning the lock should be identified to plan the further opening process. From the looks of the safe I assume it is a lever lock of some kind. Skeleton keys are not applicable to this type of lock. Professionals usually drill then one hole if the identification was correct, or multiple holes if it wasn't. A few have a big enough set of picks, that they can open it without damage. If you want only know what's inside, you could drill a hole somewhere in the middle and stick a $5 USB endoscope inside. I have never seen someone asking like you picking open their safe, but most people asking like you don't have a key safe. If you want to try it will be a major project.

Hi thanks for the reply, the house I am in currently is owned by a friends family member and we moved into here around 2 years ago, but supposedly the safe has never been opened in the 100+ years that the landlords granparents had been here. So its mainly just curiosity of what could be inside tbh, I dont think id ever drill into it but lockpicking would be something id try if it was possible. Feel like I could be wasting money also tho

I doubt it will be difficult to pick, but only with the right tool and skill.
