Sargent & Greenleaf 6730 contact area

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Sargent & Greenleaf 6730 contact area

Total n00b here... I bought our house 5 years ago that has a Horizon floor safe in the garage floor and an S&G 6730 (I think!) lock. The previous owners never had the combination, so neither do I. For fun I want to figure out how to manipulate this lock.

I've read several guides online & watched videos on how to manipulate this lock so have a fair idea of the theory & practice. So far I haven't had any luck getting it open.

The main thing that seems off to me is that the contact point area seems to be from 5.5 - 12.25, whereas most of the guides and demonstrations I've seen seem to have the contact area either side of 0. Is this expected or something unnusual that I need to handle differently?

Thanks!

[Admin Edit: Moving this post from Ask Beginner Hobby Lock Picking Questions (for using lock picks on lock cylinders that operatare using keys) to This Old Safe (where all manner of safe and safe manipulation discussion can be found)]

Safe lock manipulation is a ton of fun, look for Matt Blaze's paper on manipulation, and aside from the info here, Keypicking forum has a lot of gpod threads and you can find videos of it being done on youtube, they really help with concepts that are hard to convey via written word on a forum.

Can't wait to see you open it!

I believe dial spindles can be splined at different numbers — at least 41 and 50 are common — and this will change the contact points and forbidden zone but not the functionality of the lock. The contact area seems reasonable to me :) Happy manipulating and good luck!

Did look at three of my S&Gs. They have 6.5/14, 5/12 and 1/15. The most important thing is, that the safe is open. Nobody cares then where the CPs were.
