tell me about my Mosler safe

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

tell me about my Mosler safe

I am new to safe manipulation and picked up this Mosler on Craigslist. From the serial number it was made in 1951 or so. I have come to the conclusion that it is a 4 combination lock. Can anyone else tell me anything that might be of importance such as left turning or right turning lock. This was actually a safe within a safe. It is only 13 inches wide. Supposedly it came from a bank and I have tried all the default combinations to start. It is EXTREMELY heavy. Thanks

Your last turn will be to the Left in order to retract the bolt, so if you are pretty sure you have a 4 wheel lock, the dialing order would be like this:

5 times Left to the 1st number (meaning turn dial Left or Counter-Clockwise so you pass the 1st number 4 times, and stop on 1st number the 5th time around)
4 times Right to the 2nd number (meaning turn dial Right or Clockwise so you pass the 2nd number 3 times, and stop on the 2nd number the 4th time around)
3 times Left to the 3rd number
2 times Right to the 4th number
1 times Left to retract the bolt
Pull up on handle to rotate door 45 degrees
Pull door open

You could try to see if the safe was decommissioned and has all wheels set to 50, something that is sometimes done when a safe is retired or a bank auctions one off.

Turn the dial Right 4 times passing 50 and stop on 50 the 5th time around.
Turn the dial Left until it stops letting you turn it
Pull up on handle to rotate door 45 degrees
Pull door open

Other common combinations that are worth trying may be patterns such as 10-20-30-40, 20-40-60-80, 20-40-80-60, 20-20-20-20.

Good luck,

Finally got it open. Someone put two numbers only two numbers apart so my graphing didn't really show two numbers. Anyway can someone tell me what kind of lock this is?

Congrats! Must have been a real rush!

If the wheel pack on the back of the cover has 4 combination wheels, then the lock is a Mosler RB-104 / B-104

Could you share the combination that the wheels were set to?

Thank you,

yes it is a four wheel lock, combo was 63-27-65-34. it will open in either direction but you have to finally turn it to 97 where it catches and then right to open.

I have a similar Mosler lock, however with 3 wheels. The combo has to be dialed RLR and then to left where it locks at 30. Then the lock is retracted and safe can be opened. Dialing LRL will not open it
