Old Mosler Bahmann Co info please

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Old Mosler Bahmann Co info please

Postby jake1960 » 4 May 2023 16:56

Hello
New to this forum
I just got home with this old Mosler Bahmann Co safe and am trying to figure out the combo
I opened the lock and found a small "C" clip laying inside, not sure where it came from
I searched the forum to learn how to figure the combo but the pictures from years past don't show up
With everything inline and the handle open the dial is at 2
Is there a video anywhere which shows the method?
I know it weighs over 600# with the door off
Any info as to age or worth would be appreciated greatly
Thanks in advance
Jake

First of all, this is how this lock is opened: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEYjgOFKR1U
This is exactly like the current locks are opened.

The C clip might have secured the wheels to the wheel post, but removing the dial, then the clip, then attaching the dial again doesn't make much sense. Nonetheless, are the wheels quite wobbly when you try to tilt them?

In viewtopic.php?f=36&t=62460 is a photo-heavy post explaining all the bits and pieces of a modern combination lock. This will probably help you understand your lock, which is just a bit more simple. There is a photo showing a "retaining clip". At this position might be your C clip. Maybe you can also visually check what is there at this location in your lock. This posting also explains what to do you set a combo, when you do not know the current one, but this requires a change key. Alternatively you need to find out how to turn the dial to position the gates under the fence.

Nota Bene: Do not close the door before verifying the opening sequence at least three times!

Yes, after clicking on your links.

Here the IMHO most important of them directly:

Hm. Had a look in my lock. This C clip is holding the wheel pack. Do reinstall it you will probably have to remove the drive cam (and hence dial). To do this remove the spline key which is pushed in by wedging under its nose a thin flat screw driver and lever it out until it can be pulled. Then you can screw out the dial and remove the drive cam.

Thanks for that info. Now when I take it apart as you recommend, will all the pieces fall apart in my hand?
Once I figure the combo I plan to sell the safe, but of course I need it in working order.
The thing I found most interesting was the inside lock pieces appear to have been engraved. Is that odd for something that may never be seen?
Thank you

You can push back the wheels when removing the drive cam, but I don't think a wheel comes of without pulling. Because something is not in order I do recommend a full service, i.e. full disassembly of the wheel pack, cleaning with a rag, inspecting all pieces, checking their assembly order, slight oiling on the outside of the tube, reassembly and checking of the operation. Maybe someone with no knowledge has tinkered with it and made things worse.

Thank you for the info.
I took it all out, cleaned, oiled lightly and replaced.
The C clip is now back where it belongs.
Now I just need to figure out the combo
It is difficult to see the gate on the innermost wheel
Will fiddle with it hopefully soon.
Thanks again

After cleaning up the outside dial there is a tick mark with a star at top dead center, no numbers from 0 to 20 and another tick mark at about 1-2 oclock
Am I correct to assume the tick mark with the star at TDC is the mark to use when figuring the correct combination?
Any help is much appreciated

Yes, the star is the opening index. The other mark is the change index.
