Diebold safe identification

Postby bigconrad » 12 Jul 2023 11:53

I recently came into possession of an older Diebold safe and need some help with identification for potential resale. I've already visited a dozen or so sites looking for clues, but was hoping you fine people would be able to cut to the chase.

Particulars:

dial: Diebold Safe & Lock Co. Canton OH PATENTED May 28 1871
dimensions: 74x37.25x28
handle-inscriptions: there are two handles. the right handle is inscribed with 12S. the left handle is inscribed with 12S995

It's possible that the S is an 8 in the numbers, but you can look at the pictures to see what you think.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Hi, and thanks for your post.

What information are you specifically interested in? Here and on Facebook I see a lot of people who stop by and say things like "tell me about my safe" or "any info on this safe?"

Typically they just want to know what year was it made and how much they can get for it.

As for identifying it, what do you mean? Old safes did not always have a model number, and if they did someone would have to have a 100 year old Diebold catalog to see what the model number may have been.

Thanks for clarifying,
Squelchtone

I am hoping to get enough information to represent it properly in a for sale situation. Date and model are my primary goals. Given the illiquidity of this particular market, price is not an immediate concern.
