remove lock from safe

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

How can I remove this lock or retract the bolt so I can open door?

In the middle of the round brass part, there is a spline key-- try to pull it out without breaking it. Then unscrew the dial &the phillips/slotted screws in the corners of the lock body.

You may want to take a pic before you begin, don't ask me how I know

Of course if you depress the relocker, then the bolt will slide back in but I don't think we're supposed to discuss that here

I got the door open. I have read how to tell the combination by turning the dial and watching the wheels, the gates and fence and how they line up. This lock the wheels are in the cover and you can't see the when turning the dial. So either how do I tell what the combination is or how to set a combination?

The last number of your combination is 80
I can tell this from your photo, look at the little line on the inner hub, it points to 80. Notice that the wheels are stamped with a number as well, wheel 3 is at the top of the sandwich, then wheel 2 and wheel 1 is closest to the back cover. Take the wheel pack apart and lay it out on the table in order and you can see what each wheel is set to.

Thanks very much. I found that combination and I can dial it in but the fence won't fall and bolt won't retract. I can pull the plate with the wheels and all the gates are lined up and the fence is right there but won't fall. With the wheels out the fence falls nicely and bolt retracts. I think the lock is not good, the long stem has been welded and ground down. When dialing there is tight spots and takes a little more pressure to get past that. There is also loose sloppy spots. I'm gone mess with it a little more but think I need another lock. What kind, make and model lock can I get for it?

That is a very well made lock, so you should not need another lock. It just sounds like you need to have a little more practice with this one and learn the dialing procedure for it.

After you dial the 3 numbers of the combination, there is one final turn you have to make in order to align the driver wheel (the little wheel that is inside the lock body) so that the fence can drop in.

Here is the dialing order for your lock:

Dial Left three times past __ and stop on __ the fourth time around (this is for wheel 1)
Dial Right two times past __ and stop on __ the third time around (this is for wheel 2)
Dial Light one time past __ and stop on __ the second time around (this is for wheel 3)
Dial Right until fence drops in and keep turning dial to retract bolt until dial stops.

You could introduce a file to your wheel gates, make your lock way less picky lol

Thanks all :D . All the wheels are free in the cover, the fence is free in the body. Put the cover with wheels in the body and it is tight, I can turn the dial but it just doesn't feel right. Well it is a safe in a safe so someone would have to open big door before the little door so it is still secure and that space is useable. I'm going to forget it a while. I am removing the bolt to make sure I don't get locked out.

I just couldn't resist trying again this morning. On the cover where the wheels go and the stem sticks inside it isn't square, ie when the thing on the end of the stem goes in it binds on one side. I reamed it out a little and it helped. Maybe stem is bent a little also? That plate the wheels goes on doesn't look just like what I see in pictures. It has a hole in it for a combination change key.

Success, I got it working. I kept trying by barely opening the lock and watch the wheels and the gates just simply not in the right place for the fence to fall in them. Remember I said the stem had been welded, well it had not been welded in the right position. I set combination to all same number so it be easier so see when peeping in. I kept moving the dial till the gates lined up under fence. The dial showed several numbers from what I set combination to but it works.
