Frozen combination mechanism

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Frozen combination mechanism

Postby jps3_GT1970 » 10 Oct 2023 9:50

I have owned a Hansco round floor safe since 1977. It is identical to one I saw posted on the forum which was identified as a rebranded Major round lift out floor safe. I have not used it in several years and unfortunately the combination dial is now frozen. I placed some items in the safe for long term storage. It was under water in 1990 when my lakeshore retail store business was flooded. Comments?

You haven't opened it since 1990, or that's when it flooded but the safe worked well enough since 1990 until recent times?

Sounds like a safe technician or qualified locksmith will have to drill it open, you can find someone near you by going to https://savta.org

Thank you for your reply. I went back and looked at the combination tag which came with the safe. It definitely is a Major safe. I did all I could in 1990 after the flood to clean it up and was able to use it continually through 2008. Then I used a higher capacity drop safe until now, and used the floor safe for long term storage. Last opened it about 2 years ago. I was surprised when I discovered the combination mechanism was frozen. Thank you again for your help.
