HHM Charpoitsafe that needs opened

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

HHM Charpoitsafe that needs opened

Postby old_safe_needs_open » 6 Jan 2024 22:02

Hi!
I have an old safe that is marked Herring-Hall Marvin Safe Co as well as Charpiot safe CO. we have had it for 15+ years and have not figured out the combo yet. Are these usually a 4 number combination? Someone once said it was a postal safe, does anyone know any information that might support that? Any useful tips in cracking this baby open and still being able to preserve it for use?
Thanks!

I'd start by counting the wheels, that may give you a rough idea of how many numbers there are in the combination.

It's not clear what you've tried so far, but have you checked out any safecracking materials? They can be intimidating but if you sit with them for a bit and ask questions when you're stuck, I promise the ideas get clearer :)

The lock in your HHM is an S&G M6730. RH mounted. 3 wheels and driver. Opening sequence 4L-3R-2L-R to open. The handle on your safe is in the wrong position if it is locked. In the locked position the handle should be vertical. Through the years of many openings the handle has moved to the 9 o'clock position, telling me the safe hasn't been serviced on a regular basis.
Charpiot Safe Co probably was the local distributor for HHM. USPS used many safe brands so it being used as a Post Office safe is feasible.

If this was decommissioned from the USPS and sold at auction, the combination may have been reset to 50-50-50

To try this, turn the dial Left passing 50 3 times and stopping on 50 the 4th time around at the 12 o'clock "crow's foot" opening index. Next, turn Right and the dial should stop dead when you reach around 85 to 95. If it does not stop, then 50-50-50 is not the combination but you could also try other common combinations such as 50-25-50, 20-40-60, 20-60-40, 25-50-75, 10-20-30, 25-50-25

Do not be tempted to cut the hinges, or knock the dial or handle off the safe with a hammer. Doing so will not open the safe and will cause an even more expensive lock out.

Good luck,

6700 series S&G group 2, as @bitbuster said.

Ideal to learn manipulation on. At the end of the day you'll end up with an undamaged unlocked safe to show for your efforts.

Finding the 3rd number will be pretty easy, even as a raw novice, even using an unaugmented dial.

The second number is likely to be quite a bit more difficult. Add an extended pointer to the dial and a tape measure at the end of the pointer. Check every other number, not every two and a half. Go all the way through the dial starting at 99, even if you see a gate signature early. You may have a false positive.

Then brute force the first number. Try 2-12 in intervals of two. Then all multiples of 5, then go back and fill in the even numbers.
