Locked and hoping to manipulate it open

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Locked and hoping to manipulate it open

I bought this locked in hopes of manipulating it open. I'd rather not drill it.

Putting pressure on the handles doesn't make the dial harder to turn.

Flipper fence maybe?

I don't think S&G had ever a flipper or friction fence. Probably standard fence lever. Possibly no spring and gravity only. If you can't feel it, then it may be stuck. Or it may be wear.

Any chance you can post a photo of the entire safe? we can better identify what lock box is inside.

Thanks,

I found someone with an identical lock who was kind enough to share some pics of his lock -

Yes, that is what I would expect too. The spring may push down the fence lever, or it may not, like in this photo and in my lock. Then it is behaving like a gravity fence. And this lock likes to move around with the bolt shifting also its lever. So you may get better readings when you put some torque on the handle to hold the bolt fixed in position.

Just a small comment: with these locks the pin the connects the lever to the roller bolt is quite small, and has to be low friction to allow gravity to open the lock. This means that especially with older locks the fit between the pin and the hole is a bit sloppy, and the fence will tilt. All this to say these will indicate 95% of the time in order of last number to first number.

Thanks. That's what I was anticipating as well. I'd think wheel isolation for the 3rd wheel would yield results.

The thing is, I'm not finding contact points at all unless I rapidly spin the dial, and that causes me to overshoot them and not be able to quantify them.

I see an autodialer in my future.

I know some people have used audio tools for the forest bit. Once you find a number the cl’s should get stronger.

Sometimes putting pressure on the handle can help give more reliable contact points is my understanding.

Before autodialler it might help to see if a quick run of AWL or AWR reveals a position where contact points show up clearly, not necessarily looking for reading improvements other than strength of the contact points.

I appreciate your suggestions and will implement them.
