Victor Safe Internal Lock Box Key Help

Postby TheCounty » 3 Apr 2024 21:06

Hello all.
New to the forum as I have recently inherited a nice old Victor safe. Fortunately I have the combination and it works a delight.
Unfortunately the internal keyed box had one hinge pin missing and the lock stuck open without a key.
Looking to put things carefully right again and maintain all patina, I am looking for direction in getting a new key made.
The code on the inside of the lock is " TU1 " .
Also, I was wondering if Victor made this small key lock or was it bought in and from who?
I am most grateful for any help or conversation.
Pics below
Cheers

That is a nice heritage!

I don't think Victor made key locks. These locks were very common at that time and there were multiple manufacturers, e.g. Yale.

Blanks for such type of lock are still available, at least for locksmiths. Might be a bit of work to find a fitting one. Alternative is to make a blank from sheet metal.

Here are two videos showing this kind of lock and how to make the bank side key:

Yours is single nose and has no bank side, but I think it still explains how your lock works and approximately what has to be done. Of course the easiest is to find a locksmith doing the work.

Great info from Martin to help you on your quest.

In plain terms walk into a local brick and mortal locksmith shop that has been in your area for a long time and hand them that door and say that you would like a quote on how much it would be for them to make a working flat key to the levers inside that lock.

Tell them you are happy to leave the piece there if it makes the cost more affortable as that let's them work on it when they have some spare time, but agree to the timeline so they dont take weeks to get it done. They should have a wall of flat key blanks and one of them will have the right shape to fit inside your lock. They will just have to make the needed cuts to make it turn all the way and operates the lock.

The price may be $25-75 bucks depending where you live. To do the job the locksmith can either take your lock apart and make some measurements or they can impression a blank, either task will take time so you are paying for their hourly labor and experience. Agree on price before hand if possible so they dont say you owe them $125 suddenly and only go to a real locksmith shop, not Ace Hardware and dont call numbers that do auto and home lock outs a lot of them are fly by night overpriced scammers and not actual locksmiths.

Here are some photos of the flat keys and a link to one on ebay but it probably does not match your lock's levers and may or may not lock or unlock it.

Hi Again.
Thanks for the responses. Pretty much the direction I am on.
Today the safe actually made the trip to my garage. Winched it carefully up stairs from basement on boards with towels. Rolled across 3 rooms in house on wooden boards to front stoop. Then up into truck. Truck to garage, unloading much easier with the bucket on the front of the old Nuffield. Yes, safety straps and cushions were in ample use.
Below is a better pic for anyone interested.
I have talked with a local senior locksmith and he said that I was welcome to browse his selection of old flat keys but that fiddling type of work would cost a fortune as it would displace his time at much higher paying jobs. He is busy as can be. Hopefully I can find a suitable key to fettle into service, otherwise I shall work one up from scratch.
Now the funny part... my wife tells me today that she is sure that her father had a key for that lock. We have mostly cleaned out a lot of the house and have found 20+ old house and car keys, but no little flat key. I foresee myself routing through the basement & workshop rafters and every other spider webbed corner on a new search... haha.
I'll keep you posted.
Cheers

A bit of quick luck.
The first antique shop that I stopped into had several tins of old keys. Two of them showed great promise and seem to be from the right era. Gaining some insight on the topic, I found
that Eagle was one of the larger lock makers and both keys were nicely detailed with their name. The one shown on the bottom of the picture slides right into the lock and will likely be
the one I fettle to work. Not shown, but on the other side of the key is a code number similar to that found on the lock itself ( #,letter,# ) . Now finding time for this little operation...
Once again, I shall post an update on how it pans out.
Cheers

You can also reorder the levers to make them better suited for your key.

Have fun!

Hi all. Finally an update to this project. I have been pecking away at this bit by bit, and finally it is complete.
To pick up where I left off, the upper key in my previous picture turned out to be the winner after inner lock disassembly, much measuring, & figuring.
The inner lock was fairly straight forward to disassemble and figure out. Strangely the internet gave no insight to the inner workings of this type of lock & for those interested I have listed pictures of my disassembly and the final key that resulted. Works a charm. Hope these pics are of help to someone.
As for the hinge pins of the little door, I fettled 2 brass wood screws into proper sized flat head pins and lightly crimped the bottoms to affix them in place.
The tin box was removed, derusted, and treated to paint matching that of the little door.
Next came the carpet. What was there had decayed or was moth eaten to near dust. Removed tacks carefully and then treated all wood to multiple applications of tung oil.
A false bottom was then cut out to match the bottom of the tin box, as well as the floor of the safe itself using what I think was 1/8" beech plywood. I then glued what I felt was a period appropriate pattern of material to finish it off. I visit out fabric store occasionally but this time it was more fun than usual as I asked the gals on the floor if they could help me pick out a real "Tacky and Ugly pattern and color". They definitely had a bemused look on their faces until I filled them in on the details. As always, they were a great help.
I used headliner adhesive to affix the material and was quite pleased at the result.
Then another move down 7 stairs into our basement from the garage, and it has found its new home. Last 3 pics showing result. Patina is nicer than in pics, as the flash seems to bring out the blemishes much more than the naked eye sees.
Cheers & thanks to all.

I love the carpet!

I think you should fix the spring. I would fear that it falls of. It should be possible to push it in from the side.
