Best Listening tools?

Hi All - I'm wondering what people use to listen to safe locks? And while you're telling me your favorite tool, can you tell me what you're listening for?

I used a stethoscope but it all sounded like garbage to me. Can you help me understand? Am I listening for gates? For the nose to come off the drive cam? Or for it to hit a contact point? Something else?

For many years I used a Roland Edirol recording device as amp and a pick-up mic build by Ratlock. But I recently bought the "CONTENDER" from mba (available only with locksmith account) and found it to be better. Not to early as my Edirol died.

There is a newer version 9HR in France with a hair less shipment, but as I am more happy with the Contender I don't really need it atm. Thanks
