Looking for information, advice and just general knowledge

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Looking for information, advice and just general knowledge

Postby jpinnc » 9 Jan 2025 15:39

Good day!
I recently stumbled on this site and have enjoyed reading post and now I'm hoping I can gain some insight.

Firstly, please let me know if what additional information would be helpful. Since this is my first post I'm not 100% sure if the protocols.

About 15 years ago I purchased a building that was formerly a US Post Office. The building was constructed in 1940 and contains a walk-in vault that is locked and the combination is unknown.

The exterior dimensions of the door are 81.5" H X 38.75" W. The dial has "York" inscribed on the knob. I am unable to find any other markings.

I would love to open this vault one day!

At a very high level I understand, at least in theory, the principles of manipulating the lock. However, I don't expect that I will gain the required experience any time soon (ever?).

So I'm looking for:
1. Any recommendations on ways to find out more about the vault and lock itself.
2. Any recommendations of somebody in the Greensboro, NC area that might be able to manipulate the lock open. Every place I've contacted to date all want to drill it.

Thank you for any feedback.

Best regards,
jeff

Hi!

A start could be to show us some photos. A few people here also would be willing to help if it is not to far for them.

Let me tell you that we had here already a few people who tackled an issue like yours by manipulation successfully. Persistence is the key.

Did you look up the techs on savta.org? Manipulation is not a common skill for safe techs, but your chances are higher with safe techs than with locksmiths.
