Herring Hall Marvin safe

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Herring Hall Marvin safe

A friend of mine gave me a old Herring Hall Marvin safe that he did not have the combination for.

I have been searching for a picture of a safe with the same style of combination dial as this safe has but have not been able to find anything to help me identify what lock it might have. There are no markings on the dial.

Can anyone help me identify it from the pictures?

Thanks in advance if anyone can help with this.

Hi Leon, I would work with what the lock tells you. How many wheels can be felt by wheel pickup? Most likely there are 3. Does turning the handle have an influence on how the dial turns? Can you feel contact points? Usually they are in the region 0 to 20. I would look here especially in the region 12 to 18.

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, there are 3 wheels.

Turning the handle does not cause any drag on the wheels. I can feel when some of the wheels make contact but there is one section where the dial gets hard to turn, so it is almost impossible to feel if there is any contact between the wheels in that area.

I am trying to see if the manufacturer of the lock can be determined by the dial. I do not find many dials with only 70 numbers on them.

What you feel is much more important than a name.

Where does it get hard to turn? Does it depend on other things to get hard to turn? Both directions?

The dial drags from 60 through 20 and is the same in either direction.
It is pretty much impossible to feel anything in that area.
I have used a small amount of penetrating oil around the perimeter of
the dial but that did not help. I'm thinking that the name would be
important if I wanted to try and find a picture of the inside of the lock,
or any information on it.

Thanks,
Leon

Even with a photo the story the lock tells you is more important as every lock has its personality. I think it is a "normal" combination lock. It is not easy with old safes to be sure of this, but your feeling doesn't contradict.

Penetration oil is probably a good idea. Some spinning without force and to much speed might loosen up things too. Can you see that something is not aligned properly with dial and ring?
