Unknow safe and combination picking walkthrough needed

Postby the_white_peacock » 16 Sep 2025 16:08

Hello and thanks in advance to everybody who may be willing to help me identifying this safe and finding out the correct dialing order.
My dad passed away one year ago, and I wish I could find his safe's combination, since I've got the key.
By manipulating, I'd say it has three wheels, but I don't know if the first input should be L or R.
I watched some tutorials, and I thought I've found two possible numbers, but when I tried all numbers (two by two) while searching for the final one, it seemed like no number worked.
I attach the charts that helped me finding the first two numbers, even if I'm not sure if I read them correctly.
Any hint would be much appreciated.
Thanks :)

Unknowingly using a gate as a comparison for a high low test, invalidates it. Maybe 30 is not on wheel 1.

[Edit, removed combination because the safe is in use] would be my first try. If it doesn't open, graph wheel 1 around left, 2 at 30, 3 at 40.

Keep us updated and good luck!

Thank you so much for your help!
It's amazing: [admin edit, removed combination because the safe is in use] seems to be the correct sequence. I'm still wondering how you've found the number 20

Anyway, now the dial stops at 93, but any position seems not to be affecting the key's rotation range, that remains always the same, despite of the dial status.

I made a video, to be more clear:

I don't want to force too much , am I missing something?

You're welcome. To discover the combination, I've seen your graphs and made an educated guess.

Now the combination lock is open. Leave it where it stops at 93.

Were you able to unlock the key even without opening the combination lock? Sometimes the key can't rotate completely unless you've opened the combination lock. Then the key can fully rotate and allow to open the bolts.
Have you noticed a difference on how far can you rotate the key before and after?

Anyway, I'm guessing the bolts may be the problem now. Try to gently tap the safe door on the corners with a rubber mallet, while rotating the steel handle back and forth, and see if those bolts move.

I've removed the combination from our posts since the safe is in use. You already had time to try it and memorise it.

Have you tried to push or pull the bolts handle?

Ciao!
I've tried to push/pull the bolts handle but it doesn't move, tried to rotate it with parrot pliers, tried to rotate the key with pliers, tried to use a rubber hammer on the door, but nothing worked so far.
And it seems that both the key's and the handle's play are not minimally affected by the dial, doesn't matter if it's unlocked or reset.
It's frustrating because it seems like I'm very close to open the safe, but it's still stuck

I made another video: the only difference is that when the key is all the way rotated to the right, the handle makes a different noise, with more resonance:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1U9Mkqw ... p=drivesdk

Should I try using a heavier hammer while rotating the handle?

Thank you sooo much for helping me!

Do not use pliers! And be gentle with the rubber mallet. The safe locks are fragile, and if you damage something, it would be very difficult to open the safe.

I've seen the video. The safe locks seem open.
Have you tried rotating the steel handle in the other direction? Clockwise.

That's clearly an Italian safe. I'm not sure where you live, but I know many safe techs here in Italy. Send me a private message with your mobile number if you want.

Ciao,

Yes I've tried moving the handle in both directions.
Ok I will send you a private message. Thank you very much.

Even more likely, if it's a fire safe with a concrete barrier, heavy hammering can crack the fire protection in the door. I learned the hard way to go easy with the hammer.

Have you tried pushing in on the door while turning the handle? Sometimes something is squeezed inside the safe when the door is closed and it binds the bolts. By pushing in on the door, it may ease pressure on the bolts and allow the bolts to be retracted.

I agree with Femurat that the safe is clearly unlocked.

I agree, that both locks seem to be open. I would try a rubber mallet on the door while turning the handle clockwise by hand as handles usually have features where to much force makes the handle to loose connection with the bolt work. You could try to do at the same time holding the key fully turned clockwise with your third hand and holding the dial fully turned clockwise with your fourth hand. Maybe you can feel something happening while turning the handle. Also turn the handle and then try to extend the lock bolts or extend the lock bolts, turn the handle and retract both lock bolts. Does something change?

Never seen that dial and handle, but the safe looks kinda German. The HK on the key might point to the lock company HKS, but it must be in a late phase or even after they were bought by Mauer. The key bitting would probably help identifying the lock, but I strongly doubt it will in any way help to get your safe open.

I would run a shim around the door, to see if the bolts are retracted. You can make a shim from a plastic milk carton or if you need a more dangerous, thinner shim, one can be made from an aluminum can

Be careful with that can shim, they're very sharp
