Hello all!!!
I bought a business and a building that started its existence as a lumbar yard. Don’t have to get into that all.
But- there is a built in safe in one of the offices. It is not locked and the bolts are misaligned so it doesn’t turn enough to latch. Which is good because I don’t know the combo anyway.
I would love to get it functional again….. as it is still used as a fire safe for cash/valuables. But anyone who breaks in would know exactly where to go to clean up. With it not functional would be an easy payday for them.
I called a locksmith last week to look at it, like an actual locksmith whose very good, been around for a long them, and I’ve used in the past. I trust him.
He told me: the safe has to be taken apart to get the bolts to align again to make it functional which he could do. But he had 2 concerns…… One was that there maybe was asbestos inside it. Then the next concern he had was some deal mounted on the inside of it that he said could contain mustard gas. Yikes! He said he has seen things like that before but never this same style. And used to have some acquaintances that knew about them but they’re all passed away.
Here’s a pic of the strange device… does anyone recognize it? I’ve also taken a picture of a plate on the inside of the safe buy it didn’t turn out. I’ll post a new one tomorrow.
Please share any info you have! Thank you!!
Safe shows a date of 1912. I donno if that is when it was built or when the manufacturer began.
Just for the internet searches in the future. Strange device is marked:
