my vote's on Alpine from late 1800's, but hey I'm not a professional safeman, so I'm curious to see what others come up with.

Three more pictures of the bottom:

Please ignore the spider nests.

As an added bit of information, I'm not sure the finials are original to this safe. They don't exactly fit in the hinge holes (but that could be age). These finials seem like they are made out of lead or some other soft metal.

I'm going to go with Eureka Safe Company. I think Schwab used a different hinge design. There were a lot of very similar safes back in the day and I can't find my safe book to identify them. However the clues are handle, type of lock (unless changed), hinge design, finial (these can be changed so not 100%), wheel design and wheel mount design.

my guess would also be an Alpine, because of the hinges but i never saw one with a Y&T dial. Alpines i've seen have had plain, nondescript dials. but......

I just noticed a distinction I thought might be relevant.

After looking at many pictures online, I noticed that the dial on this safe is centered. On most of the Alpines I've seen online, the dial is offset. On the few Eureka safes I've seen, the dial is centered.

The wheel mounts and wheels look similar to some Barnes. However the Barnes hinge finials seem to be flat.

Thanks to all who have contributed so far.

Keep the thoughts coming!!

I already looked up your safe. I matched the castors, castor trim, hinges, dial & handle
and as I said, it was made by Schwab

Thank you. Now that I know that, I'll start looking for examples online. I see this as a long term restoration project (for which I suspect I may have questions). Does your book suggest a range of when this safe was made?

Thank you.

Depends on the safe door dimensions. If the door is smaller the dial will be centered.

Just curious, which sources did you use? I thumbed through all my Dave McOmie books and didn't see anything obvious that pointed to Schwab, especially the hinges since most Schwabs are what I would call half hinges (probably not the accepted term)

Thanks

I found the castors and wheels in the McOmie Files series 3, file 22.1
the hinges are in Series 3, file 22.2
Dial & handle series 3 file 21.2

Most telling is the castor trim, none are exactly the same as this one

If You desire the entire Dave McOmie experience you must subscribe, buying the books alone, will not get you there
