Missing combo?! (safe door open? figure out combo yourself)

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Thank you for your response.

Ive been messing with this safe for a few hours now, turning the dials, trying different combos. Would a picture be useful to help you help me?

It's an old safe. When I tried that sequence you listed while trying to line the plates up, I found the first cut lined up at 73.

Going the other way I found the second cut lined up at 23

And the last at 48

But this combination didn't work. I saw online that a lot of these old safes had generic settings like

75-25-50

And since mine seemed to lineup at 73-23-48 I figured mine was similar.

I can put a straight piece of metal into the tiny hole in the plates, manually line them up, and then as I turn the dial all the way to the right around 90ish the mechanism falls and the handle will turn.

Am I correct in assuming the plate/wheel closest to me, with the door and dial facing away is the first number, the middle plate is the second number and the wheel/plate closest to the dial is the first? Perhaps I'm looking at it backwards and that's the issue.

Some clarification is appreciated.

Thank you!

Well shoot man, help the next guy who comes along to find this thread by telling everyone what you did to figure it out. I bet you had to do add or subtract some to each number. This is called transferring.

The holes you stuck a wire into are for the change key which would insert into the wheels and turn, and seperate the plates as you called them so the dial could be turned to a new set of numbers and then the key turned back and removed which would sandwich the wheels to the new number. When you dial the driver picks up each wheel and if you keep dialing eventually you have all the wheels turning. When the gates of all 3 wheels align, the fence can fall in and this pulls the lever arm and bolt and the lock is open.

Thanks for letting us know what you had to do,

The gate (slot in the wheels) is wider than the fence so you have a bit of wiggle room. For example when running test combinations I go 0, 2 1/2, 5, 7 1/2 etc. Once the safe is open you can fine tune the numbers. I generally set a new combination then I will make sure I can dial it plus or minus one number.

No problem :)

It was a form of transferring.

You know how you have to turn the dial, look at the gate and then read the dial to get the coresponding number? Well I was looking at the gates after I had turned the dial the fourth time, which moved the locking bar and lines the gates all up at the wrong degree.

Assume we're looking at a clock and instead of looking at 12 o clock, I was assuming the gate lined up a 9 o clock, which is a few degrees off, due to the last turn being mainly to unlock the locking mechanism/bar. So every number I had chosen at 9 o clock was a few numbers off from where they were supposed to be. I should have been reading the gates at 12 or straight up and down and not 9, as 12 is where they all lined up before that final turn.

I was also reading the wheels in an incorrect sequence (backwards). A picture would probably do my explanation justice.

On a side note, I also did a couple of searches on the history of my safe and read a lot of info on various sites by some locksmith known as "Andy," who told a bit of helpful history. There was also some random helpful info that pertained to the fact that old safes of certain brands stuck to certain number combinations which were pretty simple tbh.

Hope this helps.
